I have now found the explanation for the non working accelerator pedal sensor which was that a missing sensor arm! After a simple repair I road tested the car and have fully functional hydractive suspension, which is an impressive thing. I think the performance is better than any other of my cars, which for a 1989 160K mile car is quite something. It was also possible to film each sensor test in action that I hope to post up tomorrow. With regards, Matthew T.

Of all the HA sensors, Matt, the throttle potentiometer is probably the most sensitive, in that any quick or sizeable movement of the pedal results in switch-off of the EV(s). As you say, driving around with EV monitor-LED(s) is very instructive, and really does let you know how the system is responding.

Faced with rear-end crashiness a couple of years ago, notably on the 0.5km straight but lumpy and uphill concrete road that leads away from our house, I experimentally fitted a throttle-pot knock-out switch, so that I could use the accelerator with some enthusiasm on the hill (almost impossible otherwise) without the suspension going into firm.

This worked well enough, up to a point - but the car could still sometimes flip into Firm on the way up, which I put down to the body movement sensor detecting rapid suspension movements. Taken more slowly, it would stay in Soft.

Fitting the late-type Xantia suspension regulators finally sorted the problem, as they are immune to the changes in hydraulic pressure resulting from sudden suspension movements, and which can allow the original valves to jump out of Soft. The pedal-pot defeat switch is still in place, but no longer used.

I agree with you about the fitting of EV LED(s) - they are extraordinarily informative, and allow a good bit of system diagnosis while driving.

Glad you've got your comfort back! Looking forward to the movie...

I do like the wheels on the "new" car: unfussy but eyecatching. Sort of minimalist. However, are they the correct wheels for that model? I presume the ones that you took off were the correct ones?

Would such wheels be correct for my M reg XM 2.5 TD estate?

The wheels that came with the car are shown in the photo above and not correct for any XM but an aftermarket option chosen by the previous owner! I have fitted the original type 'speedline' alloys and the three-spoke 'Saab style' wheels were passed on elsewhere. With regards, Matthew T.
