Unlikely. Charles said even the high beam indicator was flashing at the same time. Such problems of normally unrelated circuits are earthing problems typically (and are rather common in the taillights of many cars).

I would start by removing the instrument cluster and a thorough visual check (visibly burnt or damaged PCB). If nothing obvious found, I'd clean and temporarily reconnect all connectors to check its functioning thoroughly.

Besides, if already out of the car, I'd also take the opportunity and replace all those bulbs for extra peace of mind.

The sensor was no problem before the heater matrix was done so I assume something wiring related. Anyway noted about getting the cluster out - something to be done when I have the time!

I suspect an earth not connected, as well.

Take it back to where you had the matrix fitted, it is likely to be related to that work.

Which I'd love to do, but not in the diesel as that is now having a 3 month working holiday with a friend in Lancashire. With luck the misfire will be sorted on the Black XM this week as well.

Oh yes, Trapperjohn. Gives him the chance to consider the virtues and vices of a diesel XM and me the opportunity to have a space on my drive for my new Volvo while I wait for the Black XM to be sold (once these misfires are sorted it's going on the market). Having the grey XM as a day to day car was a mistake, it needs a bit more sorting and is better at an auxiliary vehicle, so that will be done when or if it returns.

What's the score with the misfire on the V6 then Charles?

I cleaned the engine bay and then as soon as I took it for a drive afterwards it started backfiring and misfiring. I'm having the local garage check the plugs and leads. I can't even begin to make an impression on the nuts holding the panel with the spark plugs in to remove them myself.
