One of my staff members had a loose wheel and I had to say to him twice, "are you sure it's not a loose wheel" before he checked..and found the bolts about to come out.

I wish I had checked, because if they were loose and nipped back up fine I could check that all was indeed well, and not have caused all the damage.

As it is, I need to wait until tomorrow night when I get the brakes back together to tell if all is indeed well or if it's knackered something else too, or if something else is broken anyway which caused it to shed a wheel. The seller said no work had been done on the front end recently, but the pads look very new...

I checked the bolts on the XM this morning too, just to be sure. All is well!

Christ what an experience!! :o :o

You're very lucky Sam, you managed to stop safely without totalling the car or anyone / thing else, it could have ended up a real disaster which doesn't even bear thinking about :?

Love how far the brake disc was ground down!

Glad you're alright and the cars not too badly bent.

I'm sort of glad it happened in the ZX and not the XM as I reckon I would have lost a few LHM pipes when the front corner hit the ground, which would have been fun to move about! I had to drive the zx down our road when it came off the AA truck as he couldnt get down our road without reversing down/up, which is pretty impossible to do!

Normally wheels come off without hitting the bodywork. The first you know is a lone wheel spinning off up the carriageway, then the car goes down.

A friend and I once rescued a middle aged woman who had lost a front wheel. One bolt off each of the other wheels and she was good to go.

Looking at the wheel arch liner earlier it had been flailing around a bit as it's scuffed it all up!

However, it's fixed now! New discs, and I stripped the caliper down (didnt get the piston out though), cleaned and re-greased it with brake grease rather than coppaslip, worked the piston in and out a bit and she's better than on the test drive! All noises have gone, she tracks well and is fighting fit.

Will drive it to work and back tomorrow for a real test though! Then a bit more fettling at the weekend and she can be taxed, and I can get the XM sorted and ready for sale!

I did buy the wrong front discs (solid rather than vented) and still have them, was going to send them back. A quick look at the rears shows they are solid discs, so if the solids fit then I'll keep them, get some new pads for the rearsand overhaul that and bleed all the calipers at some point.

Happier now!
