Here's a quick pick of my 1992 Turbo SD:

Image

Since this pic I've had a go at painting the bonnet - the paint wasn't a brilliant match so I'll be having another go at it in the near future, but it does look slightly better than in the pic. I've also given it a bit more of a wash and I'm in the middle of t-cutting and polishing the rest of the paintwork, and cleaning up the plastic trim where possible.

I've collected a solid boot liner for it, plus a load of other spares, including an almost complete set of lights (so if you want to hang onto your sidelights Mark you can do, although I'd still buy them if you want to get shot). I also have a replacement base for the driver's seat promised as it's ripped along one of the seams.

It drives really nicely, although there are a few issues to sort on it:
It seems to run hot, not an issue on A roads, but on the Motorway yesterday when climbing the temperature did too, to the point that I turned the heater on before it climbed into the red. The coolant looks a bit manky, so the plan here is to drain and flush the cooling system, check the thermostat, and also check the cooling fans operation. If I can find a suitable way to do it (ideally a standard looking switch repurposed for the job) I may fit a fan over ride switch just for piece of mind.
Occasionally the ABS decides it's not working. This seems to be voltage related, as it's most likely to do this first thing in the morning, and if I pull over after 10 minutes and restart the car, it all works OK. If I'm stopped in traffic it also occasionally drops out if I operate something with a high current draw, such as an electric window.
Occasionally it doesn't want to operate the starter on the key - this is a wiring issue which I'll get around to.
The boost gauge doesn't work - I'll check the connection to the sensor, when I've worked out where it is.
The rear washer doesn't work
Near side front fog light lens is broken - Sod's law dictated that of the 3 fog / turn signal assemblies picked up yesterday, the only one that actually fits the car is for the other side!
The passenger mirror only moves when it wants too - it'll be ok once I get it adjusted properly!
The driver's side rear window doesn't work - to be investigated, but low on the priority list.
There are other occasional electrical outbursts that add to the exitement - the rev counter went mad for a few seconds coming off the M5 yesterday, and the dot matrix panel decided to tell me none of the rear lights were working while I was reversing into a space at the local supermarket last week, but both problems then sorted themselves out.

I'm also after a set of wheel trims - I believe the ones in the pic are Mk2 ones, but I prefer the look of the flat disk ones that I believe it should be fitted with. The other problem is that the trims on the other side are Halfrauds specials, but at least the trims on each side match each other!

Any advice or offers of parts greatfully recieved, and I'll keep you all up to date with progress.

Welcome Mike and your car appears to be the same colour as one owned by Russ just down the road in Cheltenham which is a 1992 SED! It does sound like you are getting on top of a number of issues and I certainly agree that the early wheel trims are preferable. There is a lot of knowledge and expertise on the Forum including on diesel engines. With regards, Matthew T.

Excellent Mike :D You have some other cars there that I hope will make an appearance in this thread too ;)

I imagine they all have interesting stories to tell...

Ahhhh, another XM local to me. Is that the same colour as mine?.... Looks like Cobalt or Meteor to me. Paint code should be ETC if it is the same as mine and If so that makes our two and a local BX in the same colour. I thought it was meant to be rare!! I also spy a familiar garage I have had to frequent recently... Our two cars were built 4 days apart it seems. My RP is 5705. 22 June 92.

Great job sorting her out, and yes, great idea, get rid of the wheel trims. The mk2 swirly types I think never suited the XM. :D

I agree, it looks like either Cobalt or meteor paint.

The boost sensor is mounted on the rear corner of the battery box, the rev counter will have been affected by mobile phone signals, the rear lights will be either an earthing or bad connection issue.

Hi Russ, yes I think a lot of local Citroen owners would know that particular establishment! We've known each other for years, and this is the third motor I've aquired from them, the other 2 being my GS and a Series 2 Land Rover Marshall ambulance! it's also gone the other way 2, as I've sold them several vehicles over the years, usually when I lose some storage space - they still have my old Mehari buried in the workshop, and my old AZU and HW horsebox in the yard! They also carry out the few jobs I either can't do or run out of time for - they've helped me out of a few scrapes over the years when something's broken just prior to a holiday. We'll have to get the 2 cars together sometime to compare notes!

ETC sounds right, but I'd have to double check!

Thanks for the info Dieselman, I'll check the boost sensor tonight. Rev counter makes sense - I have a company issue Blackberry and I know if can have quite an effect on the MP3 player plugged into the radio. The rear lights haven't repeated the problem so I'll just monitor it. The car has seen very little use over the last few years and I think the 200 odd miles I've done since picking it up last Wednesday is both showing the odd fault and helping things settle down and work properly - I've already noticed the wipers running quicker then they did last week!

Some other vehicles will make an appearance if there's enough interest. The main target for work at the moment is what the last RHD Visa 17D Leader to be taxed in the UK, known as Visal Diesel, which I aquired a couple of months back and is currently undergoing a welding Triathlon (a marathon doesn't do the volume of work needed justice!). There's 3 on DVLA's database, but the other 2 haven't seen the road in a long time. Once it's done, I'll be jumping into the much needed restoration of Timex, my famously scruffy MK1 BX 19RD estate, one of only 3 known on the road, and a multiple prize winner (twice X Rally Shed of the Show winner, and most recently recieved the accolade of Car With Most Potential at the CCC All Ireland Rally). It's curretly awaiting some electrical repairs, plus welding of the rear sub frame mounts ready for it's MOT in September.

The plan is to get as many of my cars on the road as possible and rotate through them on a weekly basis (repairs permitting) so I don't get bored! Having said that, Timex and Visal diesel are likely to get more winter use than the XM (sorry, no name yet), as it's one of the tidyer cars I own and I don't want to spoil it!

Looking good Mike. :-) I'll bring the sidelights along to the National.

I know who you are now Mike, all you had to do was mention Timex!
I was looking at your H van horse box the other week, I think Tony mentioned something like a Pizza van conversion.
Great to have another mk1 about. :D

Ah, the horsebox being converted to a pizza van isn't my old one - you can just see the top of mine when you look in their yard.

I've double checked the paint code and it's actually ETW, which a quick google of brought up several names, including Meteor, Silex and Flint! I suspect that to get a decent paint match I may have to get it mixed specially.

Still finding things out about it - I was pleasantly surprised to find it's a 1 piece back seat, not a split one, which I think is a more secure design in the event of an accident. It also has lower profile tyres than it should (60 instead of 65), which go some way towards explaining the speedo over registering slightly. I guess that if I want to fit the correct size down the line I'll have to change them all so as to not upset the ABS system?

That paint code ETW can be confusing, on early cars it was Meteor, and on late cars it was Silex, which are not the same colour at all (Silex is much nearer black).
