HELP ME SAVE AN XM!

Post by jwalshe » Thu Oct 09, 2014 5:08 pm

Hi all,

I've been given a very early XM by a chap in Dublin (he was about to scrap it). I'm hoping to get the car back to where I work - at Practical Classics Magazine in Peterborough - in order to make it a project car which will then be featured in the magazine over the next 12 months.

Does anyone here with a trailer fancy using their XM (saloon or estate) to bring the car back from Holyhead? We'll feature your car in the magazine too, if you're up for it! (We'll obviously pay your expenses).

Anyone interested?

Cheers,

James Walshe

I'm not sure towing an XM on a trailer with an XM would be entirely legal sadly. Maximum towing weight is 1500kg, but an XM will be around that, before factoring in the trailer.

Ha!

Passing my place James!! Find out if you need anything you can collect on the way past, and come and see what hoarding is!!

Towing a trailer with an XM with an XM on it, WILL be over weight sadly.. the daft thing is the XM copes incredably well towing one (I have done it) but I think VOSA would have other ideas!

You could always hire a transporter and drive yourself James that I once did to rescue a car and the cost was around £90 a day. Another option is advertise for contractors on the Shiply website, which might actually be cheaper once you have factored in fuel and your time. Please let us have some more details of the car and I hope the project does go ahead as planned! With regards, Matthew T.

Would an A frame/dolly be acceptable for towing with?

Not ideal for towing an XM if the engine/hydraulics are inoperative

Doesn't matter how you do it, trailer of A-frame, the "85%" weight rule still applies!

Thanks all! You're obviously correct re towing weight - I wasn't thinking! Sadly, in light of that, I'm not sure I'm going to be able to get it back here to be honest. Let me know if you want the owner's details. As far as I know, it's an early 2.1 SED and is located a few miles south of Dublin. There's a fluid leak somewhere at the front of the car but aside from that, it's apparently in good order. I was just thinking it would be a shame to see it scrapped! Not for the first time recently, hopes of getting an XM in our pages look dashed!!! :(

I strongly recommend getting in touch with Kev Mills. http://www.rutlandcarhaulage.co.uk/ Won't be free, obviously, but transport may be less than you expect.

Kev used to be a colleague of some of your colleagues.

Seems like you're giving up too easily. Post it on Shiply. Contact vehicle movement companies, both big and small, in North Wales and the Peterborough area and see what happens.
