Mark's XM.

Post by mds141 » Sat Jan 03, 2015 4:21 am

I thought it was about time I started a thread on my XM. It's a 2.1 TD auto in Rouge Magenta. Currently running well, with an average MPG over the past 1000 miles of 47.9 MPG. Slight problem with water ingress at the moment, I'm going to try Dollywobbler's roof rack mounting holes fix. That's all for now folks. :)

47.9 in an auto, that is remarkably good. I don't manage that normally. Good luck with that car.

Excellent idea Mark. :D

Water water everywhere, used to that  . Check all external trim. I even sealed the trim that covers the roof rack holes to the car. You can see it is meant to be stuck down, but the glue dries out and water will just get in.
Boot seal I think can let water in.....might have made that up! Also maybe worth checking are the rear light seals. You never know.
Obvious ones are door and sunroof seals. But if your headlining isn't wet, can't be the sunroof. Best of luck finding the problem.

CAN be the sunroof if your headlining is wet. Mine is certainly very capable of soaking it as the seal on the glass has failed. Water pretty much pours onto the headlining.

Are the door frame seals meant to be attached to the body? I can see signs of sealant, but mine are not currently attached - though I have taken the precaution of taping over the roof rack holes.

I found also that the bottom of the quaterlights windows on the doors can leak water and it runs in between the door and the doorcards, even finding it's way through them and collects in the door bins.
The rubber tubes that join the sunroof tray can leak water. Not via splits just a weak seal. A few cable ties sorts that out.

Not got an electrical problem where the windows drop when it rains. I know someone had an issue of a self opening sunroof like that.

I'm going to buy some industrial strength mastic like double sided tape and attack the roof rack mounting holes. I've tried it with some normal double sided tape stuff and it just won't stick. Too damp and cold. It's bloody typical. Roll on summer is all I can say. :-)

This thread seems remarkably short of pics Mark. ;)

Always stuff blogs with Pics!!!

47.9 is AMAZING for an Auto! I used an M reg S2 auto with Bosch mechincal setup, and I was lucky to see 40mpg! and I purposly drove lightly!

I know yours has Lucas EPIC on it, but still... Very Good. Do you do 50mph everywhere???

I've always struggled with loading pictures onto forums, as those members of BXC will testify.

The last thousand miles have mainly been on motorways, so the average has been bumped up slightly, but even towing the caravan I'm achieving 37 mpg.

Just bung them in an email, and send them to someone!
