Most XM's have the siren behind the front bumper UK drivers side.
It was only the last year or so of XM production that it moved to the passenger side of the front scuttle.
A year or so before this the alarm system was upgraded from PSA2 to PSA3.
PSA3 has no under bonnet isolating switch making living with alarm faults that bit more difficult.

Do I remember reading that some sirens had their own built-in rechargeable battery too, which eventually needs replacement?

The spare one I took to bits had rechargable cells set in a hard set plastic resin.
Cells seemed ok but the wiring and contact pins were rotted away in more than one place.

Mine could well be behind the scuttle then. It was built on the 29th of March 2000 according to the RP number.

Whilst you are rummaging around in your scuttle Mark, I would oil or lubricate the Doseur valve linkage. Just in case...don't want binding brakes. ;)

Cheers Russ. :-) Would does the linkage look like? Apart from a linkage that is. :)

It's on the drivers side, in front of the brake valve. It's just a pivot. It has a black rubber cone which is directly above your brake pedal and then there is a funny hook type thing that attaches to that and it pushes on the pivot arm and presses on the Doseur valve button. It has a nut on the end of it. You'll see it, there's not much else in there to confuse you.
Just give it a good soaking in oil or something and move it back and forth to make sure it's all free. the grey XM had it's pivot seized solid. So it's worth checking.

Cheers Russ. Once hurricane Rachael has finished her worst I'll tackle it.
