That is very much my kind of XM as you will note from my signature Jordan and it would be nice to see more photos including of the engine and interior and history. I attach a photo of my 1990 V6 auto in platinum that also looks like your colour, although it could be the lighter pearl silver. It would also be nice to know the RP number as from the trim it looks earlier than 1992. From the appearance and location the two female plugs may be connectors from the oxygen sensor and it would be worth checking if you still have this on the front catalyster!! With regards, Matthew T.

Thanks for the comments guys.

They plugs aren't for the speed sensor, that is plugged in (trip computer still doesn't work though). I was also thinking oxygen sensor, but no engine management light on?? Will have to get it jacked up one day and have a look.

I will post some more photos when I get things a bit more sorted, interior back together and everything cleaned up.

The RP number is 5176, 10 January 1991 - a pretty early car. It was registered 27 July 1992 - a year and a half after production. My TCT was similar, registered 1 year 1 month after production.

The interior is basically all grey - leather, dash, headlining, etc. A big change from the all black interior of my TCT. Sadly the grey leather doesn't seem to wear as well as the black leather in my TCT and the grey is worn and scratched in several places.

One question about the exterior door / bumper trim - is is supposed to be grey or black? I do recall reading on early cars the plastic was grey coloured? Unfortunately the previous owner has painted it black and it is now flaking off...hope to remove the paint but it is mostly stuck so may just repaint.

Matthew, that is a beautiful looking XM, love the colour. Mine is the lighter silver - paint code ETP I believe.

I have uploaded the photos from the photos from the online auctions from its first sale and second sale (to me) to flickr -https://www.flickr.com/photos/131346482 ... 707217487/

It makes the roof look much better, longer and more floating.
Does it really make that much of a difference? Matthew's car looks magnificent with the SR and below is a (not that good) photo of mine :D

I think not IMHO, maybe darker coloured cars make the sunroof less obvious? But if you really want a "long and floating" roof you need an estate with, or without, sunroof :D

Really I like having a sunroof as long as it works, but it seems the XM's gives more trouble than most for some reason. Only other sunroof I've ever had trouble with seizing/failure was on an early 4 door Range Rover. Is there any explanation for why XM's are prone to sunroof problems, or is it just one of those things? (roof on our '96 ZX works as perfectly as the day it left the factory despite rarely being used)

Sorry for the hijack, Jordan it looks a lovely car although without sunroof I'd hope it has working air con? IMO a car should have one or the other, sometimes both but never neither. 8-)

If that is true I can understand the strong aversion some on this forum have of (their) sunroofs. Personally I've never had any problem with the SR on the 2 XMs I've owned, 1995-2004 and 2007- present.

Your XM is a beauty, Jordan and I hope you'll get it sorted to satisfaction!

I like the grey interior. Something the UK cars never got, along with the blue and brown interiors. Very different.
Strange it has a basic low spec steering wheel though..

I need the headroom not having a sunroof affords, also I definitely prefer the look of no sunroof cars. Another major factor is that they do seem to leak a lot on XM, which will eventually rot the metal and it makes the interior damp.

No sunroof is the preferred option.

Yes, for tall people the lower roof liner is a problem. I am only 1.73 m and neither do I wear a top hat in the car :D

Fair enough. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder :!:

Just a small update since I haven't has much time to tinker recently.

Sent the speedo cable off to be remade last week and got it back today. They have done an exceptional job - new inner, outer and they also fixed the broken white clip.

Figured out why the fog lights weren't working - an extra relay was added to the fog relay to prevent the fog / additional spot lights (they come on with fog lights) from switching on unless full beams were on. Removing the extra relay / wiring and plugging the fog light relay into the original socket got everything back to factory. I plan to remove the extra spot lights anyway.

Also got the interior lights working "properly". Previous owner had it wired so the interior lights only came on with the doors or the dash switch. Restoring original wiring shows why - the interior lights never go out, they just dim and come back on full brightness. Another forum member had the same issue, caused by the blue interior light relay next above the drivers knee so will have to replace that.

Jordan.
