Even on a hill, the normal brakes and quick handling of the clutch/gas seems to do it every time. You simply grab her before she starts to roll in the wrong direction.

That's how I've always done it as well, hold footbrake with right foot, hold parking brake with left, gently release parking brake, easing it up, continue holding main brake, clutch in, into gear, release footbrake and move right foot to accelerator, quickly find bite and off we go.

I don't think I've ever rolled back once, if you do it quick enough there's no issue.

She didn't seem unduly stressed... And nor did her driver... Will post some photos later.

I don't know how I bypassed this thread before, but glad to see old YDZ finally made the crossing!
I have friends in Kent and have done that ~600 mile journey down from Cairnryan docks and back many times, in 4 different XMs.

As you probably found, the long trek down the likes of that M6 for hundreds of miles, are great for finding any niggling issues, and for appreciating how effortless the XM is to drive for long arduous trips.

I would do it again tomorrow, you've got me in the mood for a road trip now!

Glad to see you're enjoying the car.

I wouldn't necessarily say the strut tops are going, you need to inspect further after scraping the rubber off.

All seems to be good... We continue to burble along... About 300 miles per week. 700 miles per tank. 42 mpg or thereabouts. MOT coming up so we shall see... :?

Finally got a chance to do some serious motorway miles. 540 miles to Wigan and back... Cruise control was missed but a healthy 48mpg overall :D
