Well ive done it again.. after the BSP project I told myself I wasnt dooing another... but. Hey guess what.. yes I am.

what to do on observation. Well ...

welding. Front outriggers and areas around rear subframe mounts. Im sure the outer cills them selfs are ok
welding on the inner wings at front which is a first for me. Be interesting that one.. :D ;)
speedo doesnt work infact the pin is stuck on 10mph. Either clock or cable.
revcounter doesnt work
lh dot matrix doesnt give its stop lamp test message on startup but the ! Light does show.
STOP light for hydraulic pressure doesnt come up all the time also no warning of low hydraulic pressure
interior lights not working but as discussed in other places the blue box is to blame for them staying on.
auto selector lcd display is a jumble and doesnt display correctly
cooling fans on all the time weither air con which works is on or not and gives over cooling.
cam belt and water pump want dooing as a matter of course and piece of mind
Battery box to air cleaner section are broke so needs a new battery box.. relays in that area need a tidy up.
fit a newly made by speedy cables bonnet release cable. Ill check it over and inform of speedys quaility.

thats all I can think of at this hour of the morning.

the inside bits im not worried about.. relativly easy im suspecting an earth somewhere exepct speedo that be cable or head
welding will take most time....ooooo crap that reminds me I need to buy a new spool of welding wire.

other observation. Well the steering rack is increadably communative it groans a lot when steering which is slightly amusing but its smooth and works fine. The car drives very well. It has pleanty of go.. impressive actually.. even for auto .m i have driven an identical series 2 auto bosch 2.1 and its not as quick. Tthe ride with new spheres is also very nice and smooth. Bit of trim rattle. Shes increadably tidy inside too.

So. Dont get me wrong. Sound daunting but theres no more here then any xm that comes in from an average owner to enthusiast it sounds a lot there but a lot will be easy fixxand not take long at all.

I actually look forward to dooing this and getting through it all.

So no time to waste.. so while other half was in bed I did a bit this morning..

main thing was to get speedo working and while in there look at rev counter and turbo guage.

so dash dismantle but while at that the front panel that houses the displays is a but worn for wear.. and the rh display clock unit is not the correct one but houses a perfect lcd display. I wonder if its the same as the xm proper one.

there is supposed to be two lugs on the top edge that screw to the rear section to hold it in place. These are missing.. theres a couple of other weak point on the front panel.. so we shall see if we have a better one in the stores to go in.

the speedo head works.. though the trip reset button was broken.. so it had to be cable. As useual the cable head has snapped from the main cable but the inner drive is fully intacked.. theres a supporting sleeve someone has put on so I placed it all back in position and then undid the cable join under the bonnet and put the head back in position and pushed the cable end right down at the speedo end.

Upon dismantling the clocks and looking closer it seems theres two broken joins on the pcb on the back of the rev counter. Ill solder these later.

As for turbo guage, this is part of the rev counter display but the three prongs pass through three copper contacts on the main pcb and they wer out of shape and not making contact.. so a quick re shape of them and put them back in. They simply pop out..

You can just just see the copper contacts on left side, in the pic above..

So reassembled it all conected it all together and plugged it all in. Then under the bonnet connected the join back up and went down the road..

The rev counter flickered so we shall see what happens when I solder that later..

successful morning!!

PMSL  So the work on the car's going to take a couple of days - piece of piss for you . . .

. . . but it's going to take a couple of months to find what you're looking for in the stores. :P

Well, I soldered the Rev counter joints, and .. nope, still a flicker when the car starts and no counting.

Ill try another rev counter out of curiosity this week, other wise its the engine sensor..

So, my first conclusion on this XM as a whole. Well, actually, mechanically other then over cooling, by either a stuck open thermostat or because the cooling fans are always on, as for engine, gearbox and brakes etc the car is actually in virtually TOP NOTCH!

The car starts perfectly and has little smoke. She goes VERY well, even for an auto, im rather impressed. Front spheres are new and make for a PERFECT front end softness. Theres a pair in the boot I assume for the rear.

Brakes also are in top form brakeing properly front and rear with no rear lift... meaning its all bled up correctly! The ABS light works correctly too. Ive not physically checked to see if the abs works, I assume it does at this moment. The parking brake is also very good too. The pedal is increadably light, almost like there is nothing attached to the end of it, but there is. Good Brakes.!!

Autobox. VERY impressed. Its smooth, smooth changing up and down with no jerking, either full throttle or light throttle, though the kickdown does need slackening off, when driving at town speeds she cant amek her mind up to be in 2nd or 3rd and she is WAY too keen to kick down meaning she is up and down 3rd 4th 3rd 4th all the time...

So, once work is done, the car could potentially be an increadably nice daily runner !
