Przem's 2.5 TD Black/Exc (1996) - first steps into XMs world

Post by Pshemsky » Wed Apr 06, 2016 10:16 am

Hi guys. At the begin just want to mention/explain again that all my Citroen experience been build with my previous (and present) cars - Xantia, C5 so there's plenty of things in XM which for me are brand new and sometimes I may come up with with 'silly questions'. So here we go...

Lets start from thing which I would like to do in nearest future:

1. dot matrix/lcd display
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BwMDv ... UJRSmt2Mkk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Small but annoying thing. I saw some articles from previous forum but unfortunately photos been taken off and for me (xm newbie) need to be procedure show step by step (including dismantling lcd display from dashboard in first place). I wouldn't mind to pay some more experience member to do such a job if willing to do it.

2. window button on drivers side - electric windows
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BwMDv ... W9Va25sOUE" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BwMDv ... XVjY3k5Qk0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

You don't have to be a genius to figure it out that this is not original XM switch for electric windows. Is anybody can show me how it should look ? Maybe someone got one for sale? I don't know why it been replaced with this one but hoping that previous owner did not mess too much with wires.

3. immobiliser key pad/lid lock
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BwMDv ... 2JJZ0J5SDA" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

That's all what left from locking pins. Not sure if there's a chance to replace just lock or whole thing need to be done. Found lid in glove compartment and till I check with other XM i'm not touching it :P

4. alloy wheels/mud guards
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BwMDv ... HZhUDRHVTg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I won't to remove these ugly mud guards asap. Is there anything I should know before doing this ? Any tips or advice how to block holes after holding bolts ?
I really dont like these Monte Carlo alloys and trying to get something different for my XM. What other make/model of cars have alloys which could possibly fit on XM ?
I found two quite cheap which are acceptable for me but unfortunately doesn't fit:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/121925717976? ... EBIDX%3AIT" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
my favourite - chrome finish to match up with bumper/door trims
and
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/111959207344? ... EBIDX%3AIT" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
good price - and shape which is in my taste too :]
I was happy to buy the ones from eBay but someone was quicker and swipe it just before me.

5. headlight washer - plastic covers
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BwMDv ... kFDb0F4Vk0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I finally manage to get them for my XM. Now the plan is to paint it in nice BLACK GLOSS colour. What will be the best way to clean, prepare and paint these plastic parts? How many covers, what paint will be the best and what's the safest way to put it on (without braking plastic holders). I wast told that I should use some blac silicone too to make sure it'll stay in place when put one.

OK. I think 5 questions will be enough for now. Many thanks for any help and advice. Regards Przem

Prem

Hi Przem

The display is a common fault with Mk2 XM's.
I sold my last repaired one a few months ago and need to repair a few more of the spare ones.

The drivers door window switches show that a failed winder has been replaced with a simple one.
That means the wiring loom has been bodged to make the new winder work.
Even if you find a correct working drivers window winder it will not be easy to reinstate.
The original XM Exclusive and VSX's came with a 4 button drivers switch giving one touch and anti-pinch.

Most XM keypad covers got broken off, some deliberately as they were seen as a nuisance by some owners and the odd dealer.
Working ones are getting rare now particularly the fake wood ones.
The hole in your photo is where the latch goes.
These were standard electrical parts on the doors of many VCR's and Computer case flaps.
The lid hinges are usually broken and springs missing.

John

I will take the mudguards and clips off your hands. They will suit my car to a t and give me spares. Discuss purchase price but remember I'm a born and bred Yorkshireman.

For the wheels consider contacting lankytim about a swap/trade for the Volvo alloys on his XM.

Hello John.
Have You got any documentation (photos/description) how to remove that display or maybe fix it ?
There's video on YOU tube and guy doing it with a soft PENCIL ? :roll:

So You recommend to leave it as it is ? I leave it, till i find a right switch and take it to the place where it been bodged so they can bring it back to 'normal'.

I do the same as with window buttons. Only do something about it if wood one will be found ;)

Give me a few days to think about it please. I only had a car for few days so far so need to think what exactly want to do with it (constatnly changing my mind). I'll let you know as soonest decide what to do.

Before I change it to something else I'll try to get/swap for 24V Speedline alloys. I would like to keep it in Citroens spirit.

ALL Volvo 850,s,v,c,xc70 alloys FITS perfectly on XM and have identical ET,bolt pattern & center bore. :!:
You can choose between 15",16",17" or 18" alloys.

How do you mean that these won't fit?

I was told (by guy who running tyre service) that Volvo got ET 38,45,47,40 (don't know where he gets that from, but knows more than me about tyres and wheels so just agreed with him) and they're moved more towards outside and probably won't fit.
So you reckon there will be no problem with fitting these ones onto XM ?

If you see my signature,you will see that i have both...Volvo & Xm. ;)

Factory ET for XM alloy is 43,same as Volvo.
Alternative ET numbers are from 35-49.
Volvos from 2005 and on have a bit different ET,but that can be corrected with proper spacers.
My friend had 225/40/18 alloys on his Xm V6.Say that to your tyre service man and he will probably say that there is no chance that they will fit an Xm.

Check http://www.wheelfitment.net/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Excellent. If unable to find xm's I definitely turn towards one from volvo. Thanks for information Misha. It's always better to get information from the right source - other XM owner.

Be aware they are series 2 mudflaps made of fairly stiff plastic and wrap around the metal. They trap grit and scratch the paint rather effectively.
