Well, I stuck the car in for MOT, after fitting a set of steel wheels with good tyres.. and we got a PASS... My tester made strong comments for how clean and new looking she is under neath!

Rides nice n softly to the MOT centre, though I did get an engine vibration when it changed to 4th too early, or the revs were too low, also on the way to the MOT I had to break hard.. The ABS light checks and extinguises correctly, however under hard braking the wheels DID lock up!

After I got the car home, I decided to get her sorted .. one at a time now.. instead of three at a time!

I sucessfully managed to get the exhaust pipe off the turbo outlet, and get all the turbo bracket off... the plan is to get the head off WITH turbo and inlet on, as its impossible to get at the manifold bolts in situ, and I dont want to disturb the front end, as the Air Con works well!

Headaches along the way, very few, the Cam belt tensioner would NOT undo, but new belt is going on, so I cut it, Ill tackle the tensioner when the head comes off, as it comes off with the head...

It was a slight fiddle to get the cam carrier off, it was catching on the inlet manifold ports, but that might have been caused by the rocker fingers getting knocked off their places...

Im at such position now that I need to unhook the top mount again, remove the turbo oil Feed Pipe, undo the head bolts, and cross fingers Ive enough space to lift it all off... I beleve there is...

As for the Vibration, I had noticed on strip down that the bolt that goes through the torque mount at the top engine mount was loose! Im hoping that was causing the vibration.

As for the ABS I noticed the unit was the Later Tevis MK.3 (I think) system as fitted to series 2 Xantias from 1998....

You will need to cut the turbo oil return pipe as you can't get it off with the turbo still mounted to the eengine.

The good news is that you can actually undo the manifold bolts, but it is a real fiddle, especially if the car has EGR.

Yea Will remembered that bit today, and cut the return pipe, it can be sleeved after when re fitted...

Anyway, a little bit more tonight and we are all clear..

Image

It wasnt too bad to do either...

However, Ive some concernes over the head...

Image

Those Swirl Chambers are urrm, a little out of line! Should we be concerned??

Image

Image

The other two are fine...

As for head gasket and cooling system pressure the gasket looked ... well.. normal with all the black "Seal" missing.. Do we need to waste money on a head pressure test, or could we be certain its just the gasket thats popped...

Looking at it, I would say the gasket is blown at No3 swirl chamber and maybe No3 and 4 water jacket. Get the head skimmed and the swirl chambers re-seated. They need to be facing the correct way to work properly, but I can't see them having roatated in service, so suspect the head has been off previously.

Hi Will..

There was ZERO water in the oil what so ever, however, there was massive pressure in the cooling system to the point previously before I got it blowing a pipe off on the cooling system.

Water constantly was pushed out, however the car started and ran perfectly on all four and no compression loss when turing over..
