But two small things that im not familliar with... I have fitted a NEW speedo sensor, however, to my horror, the needle on the speedo still went up to 55mph... though once warm it behaved. So if its not the sensor, what else do I need to look at??

Secondly, who knows about the Lucas EPIC fuel system, or, no so epic? What would cause the system to smoke a lot on accelleration? Quite smokey, 97k, new air filter, starts fine on all four, goes WELL, very well... just lots of smoke!
I haven't read all teh thread, but do you mean the speedo needle sticks at 55mph when cold, if so, it's just sticking and a spot of light oil should fix it.

For the smoke, has it been chipped?
No.. it goes up to 55mph from zero... like a dodgy speed sensor gives normally...

all colours of burnt diesel smoke.. lol.. I can make the car behind virtually disappear in black smoke.

I dont think its been chipped as it goes as well as a P reg td estate with EPIC that too smokes a bit aswell..

Check the EGR valve isn't stuck open and the air filter is clean, after that have the injectors tested

So.. ive done 3k in her now.. a few things..

I exaggerated the smoke issue.. its a light grey exhaust under heavy load i get.. not black..

The autobox has an issue which i discussed else where.. and is a job to do. The starter was always slow to turn. Sometimes just clicked.. so i swapped that this week.. the car now instantly starts now.. but to get at the starter bolts the intercooler pipe needed removing and to do thatci had to remove the Throttle Sensor/cruise bellow bracket.. that in itself now has knocked the cruise off.. something somewhere on the vac side i think..

A suspension issue has also risen too.. so i need to look into that now..

Thats all for now..

Sticky speedo time... this car was suffering from the sticky speedo syndrome. Initially accusing the speed sensor I got a new one and fitted it...

Still now and again I was going 56mph everywhere....

I then remembered about speedo head issues, so got the clocks all out again and got the speedo head out... and, hey presto, looking closely.. I found this..

Look very closely and yes, the four larger joints all had a split in them..

Ran the iorn over them again and fitted it all back and so far so good, no more sticky speedo...
