K120 YOG.. V6 SEi end of life.. final journey

Post by citroenxm » Mon Oct 03, 2016 7:55 pm

Ive spoken about her to people often.

She came to me in 2007 ish I THINK, as a fully working car, and not a project. She was brill. V6 12v Auto, which I fitted a simple single point LPG kit to her, and as she was not a project I did a stunning 40k in her and enjoyed every moment...

I have somewhere a video of a drive I did, but cant find it now.. possibly long gone..

Anyway... suprisingly very few pics in my photobucket account... however, 2009 I stopped useing her. Since then she sat and never moved again

A promise to myself to restore her, I collected the wing due to laquer lift, engine and gearbox as the one fitted had around 200k on it. Everything was collected, however but more XMs arrived and kept arriving.. and she was left.

So, after a full look over, there was far too much... well, no more then what I have done in the last few years, but time is the issue. So the innaminus decision was made to let her go. I have the 24v Manual, so really dont need two V6's.

So, better get the ole girl running, the dizzy and a plug was out, and coil off its mount. Fitted it all back in place, and gave her a whirl. Petrol was a no go, pleanty in, but nope she wasnt having it. So, I did a LPG force start.

Image

She Ran! Amazing! But sadly burst a pipe at the rear nearside. So, no hydraulics now!

So, last week I tried to move her... no chance, she was not budging! It happend the front brakes were rusted to the pads. So jacked up, wheel off, opened the caliper and wound the piston back a couple of turns to free it off. The caliper piston on both side was completely free to turn .. It was litterally just disc to pad rust! Stuck a piece of wood between the strut top underside and top of drop link to keep the front up.

Tonight was debut move... and a complete sucess too...

Image

Image

Opps, a couple of things left behind, the back box came off, the pipe had rotted away, and the hanger tore off the rear chassis leg inner... She also left the back box heat shield behind too...

Image

It wasnt an easy job, the selector cable has siezed, so, by feel of the gear selector ontop of the gearbox, coupled with a push start button that operates even in gear I managed to get her preciesely where I needed her..

Forwards in a three point turn, backing up was a little close..

Image

One last turn again...

Image

Image

Not easy shifting a car with no brakes, no PAS, and not much of a Parking brake to stop, so I had to judge when to switch the key off to stop the car...

So, now she is in place, Ill have a look to see which pipe has popped, and then its interior out!

This will be a short blog, one for me to remember mainly.. but as always any XM work I do, comes on here.

A sad day. But it will live on in parts.
That's some clever manoeuvres!

That is indeed sad news Paul, although I know the decision was not taken lightly! The S1 V6 12v is actually almost as rare now as the S1 24v and since Franklin's H plate si auto went off the radar I have not seen another at CCC events, apart from mine! It sometimes feels like I am the only mad creature trying to keep these beasts on the road, although I know you are determined to restore your 24v Paul that hopefully we may see next year. As this topic is discussing PRV6 engined cars, tonight I've been to a local classic car show and have seen the second Delorean there. Interestingly the engine is the 2.8L version and produces 130Hp. The two owners said that engine parts availability is no problem, including water pumps.

That is interesting Will and I have seen the Delorean website with plenty of parts listed as you suggest, although I am not sure the water pump is the same. Regards. Matthew T.

What was interesting to me, is that both owners (2 seperate cars) weren't aware of how widely the PRV6 engine was used. They were aware of it being a Volvo engine and used in the Lancia thema 2.8, the Renault alpine, but not the Peugeot and Citroens and other renault models it was used in.

Iirc the delorean water pump uses the V belt pully and not the 5 ridged belt pully that the xm uses..

the prv is a very widely used lump despite it being a least favorite V engine in the motoring world.

interestingly the most powerfull prv install back then when it was 2.7 litres despite peugeot and volvo useing fuel injection was when the 2.7 tune was installed in the talbot tagora.. it was 2.7 litres and tripple carbs and 165bhp... none other install at that time was as powerfull..

Interesting about the Tagora engine being tuned to be powerful. The BX4TC group B Rally car was powered by a blown version of the Tagora 2.2 litre engine.

You know a car is good when you move it 10ft and it leaves substantial and important mechanical items behind.
Although the Engine ws widely used it was messed about with a lot, the Delorean has almost no components in common, intake manifold, fuel management, pistons, crank, liners, heads are all different.

Good work there Paul, it surprised me how well it fired up and ran considering how long its sat.
