A TcT head off job

Post by citroenxm » Tue Oct 25, 2016 7:13 pm

A tct came to me.. leaking some oil into the water however not showing and water in the oil or on the dip stick... anyhow upon stripping down i also found the turbo completely siezed solid.. zero zilch movment ... so first suspect... as tct turbos are oil fed and water cooled!

After checking the oil coolers both on the engine and autobox by running with pipes disconnected it showed zero oil leakage from oil cooler and autobox cooler... so.. either turbo or head gasket..

I tonight made the exec descision after not being able to withdraw the turbo from behind or seperate the turbo from manifold (which you need to do to withdraw it without disturbing the head) i had already removed the exhaust manifold from the head so it was a case of inlet manifold off couple of pipes off belt off which was not very old either... and head off. . And easilly it came off too it almost just lifted off.. to reveal this...

The gasket broke on no.4 cylinder at the back.. and urrrghhh that gasket is rather stuffed up with rust.. this is a nice example of lack of antifreeze in the cooling system.. so.. im now slightly hopefull the gasket was causing the issue..

No.. to find a turbo.. get a gasket and head set.. and put her all back together..

Turbo pics to come tomorrow after i have opened and attempted to strip it down..

You could try dropping the turbo into a bucket of diesel to free it off.

I think its properly fried up will.. its got lil all ovr the outside of the compressor houseing.. ill need to check the oil feed pipe for oil supply. Not sure if the tct petrols have a filter gause in the pil pipe for the turbo..

Funnily enough Martin at Pleiades brought up the rare TCT turbo when we were chatting yesterday as he worked the XM.

The case is rare, but the insides are a Cosworth turbo. Is that common knowledge? He had to get one rebuilt for a customer and this was the outcome. So it looked rare and difficult to replace but once the turbo people got inside it, it was a simple swap of the internals.

Its a Garrett turbo, only the housings are ever car specific, it will just use a box standard core.

We have made some progress on this.. so much so the car is up and running again. However it wasnt completely straight forward.. once we got a closer look at the head after cleaning it down the lack of anti freeze in the system had taken a bit of a toll on the head waterways...

Unhappy with the alloys damage from the large craters i think the head would of needed far too much taking off it to make right. The tct uses only one gasket size not like the xud sister engine. Afraid of altering the compression ratio i decided to use a batter head.. with no alloys corrosion..

All back together assembly was interesting. I decided to fit the turbo first to the downpipe with manifold then fit the head and bolt all together. This all worked well and went together fine..

Some little things to do..

Leaky hp pump
Weak vac on cruise control
Crank pully is seperating
Needs rear spheres

Good to hear it is back together and running.

It sounds a bit of a bodge, but some chemical metal to fill out the recesses, then a good flatting would probably suffice for that head. The pitting is only between the waterways and well away from oil and especially compression.

I like to avoid bodge when ever possible.. certainly in this case. I dont want anything to go wrong...

I had a very mild case of this on the Prestige replacement head on two water ways, I ground it out and filled using car body filler, sanded back and painted with superglue, so far its outlasted the head gasket the car came with from new!
