Today, I have mostly been...

Fiddling with cassette players, glove boxes, heater fans and courtesy lights.

Gosh, the flimsiness of some bits from the 90s is still a shock the system - I refer to the S1 front courtesy light bulb holders, they've obviously not withstood the rigours of bulb changes too well, so I've ended up bodging (re-engineering, it was not) the way the bulb holders fit against the bus bars to stop them wobbling around and losing contact. Hopefully this will not need re-bodging too soon.

By comparison, I think Citroen went overboard with the glove box. I can imagine the gas strut endangering the windscreen, it's so overspecced. I've wimped out and not connected this up yet.

The heater fan is just about right, solid but really rather easy to get at and get apart. But 3 fan speeds, with half speeds too...? I suppose I should welcome the restraint shown at the time. These days, I'm sure the designers at Audi are trying to figure out if they can market a fan speed controller that goes to 11...

As you you know from the Outside temperature sensor thread, I've had some fun* fixing this with a Chinese replacement part.
My attention is now turning to the front brakes - there's some vibration when I lean on them and I know the boots on the calipers are shot - and the n/s hub has slight but distinct vertical play so I think it's time to tool up for wheel bearing renewal. Wish me luck.

Brute force will remove any wheel bearing.

Remove the circlip holding the bearing in, remove the carrier from the car, place it on a solid block, drive the old bering out using a solid drift and lump hammer.

Heat the carrier and freeze the bearing, fit the circlip one side and drop the bearing into the carrier.

Hi Julian, it had both front wheel bearings replaced. It could have gone again, knowing parts quality sometimes these days, I can't remember who made the ones I had put on.

P.S. Duncan gave me a receipt for loads more work he did on the car (including wheel bearing replacement) so I will forward this to you in the post soon mate.

Hi James
Again, very grateful for your time with this. And Duncan's for that matter.
Alas, I'm away for two weeks so will neither be perusing the extra history nor getting to grips with bearings or calipers till I return. I've bought discs for the front and a seal kit for the calipers, and as I'm finding the brakes to be rather lacking in power, I want to get on with that. Also, I've been finding the revs at warm idle fluctuating gradually between 800 and ~1500 yet there doesn't seem to be a problem with the throttle cable...
