Don't tell us - you're converting a Leaf to diesel . . . :?

Hi Miq, yes indeed I may very well be interested! How much do you have and what do you want for it? Cheers!

In my mind I would aim for about 50kwh of power storage. Those small packs are meant for a smaller lighter car so not as stressed.

With the engine removed you'll be able to dump the exhaust and fuel tank and this frees up some options. Some battery packs could be stored in the exhaust tunnel, I'd try and get some up front if possible over the motor and controller assembly. Ideally ditch the gearbox if possible unless you really like having gears to stir it's not really worth the extra weight.
More battery packs can be stored where the fuel tank sits and then also where the exhaust back boxes were. Ideally get a semi decent tct or petrol engines vehicle that's got a bad engine or such and use it as a donor(I know of one in Manchester :) ) and then the car overhead isn't as much.
While the front end is apart take the Janice to clear the old rust out!
With the suspension you could either use a 12v motor to spin the hydraulic pump or get a decent rated 12v hydraulic pump...

Personally I'd say the estate is your best option as under the boot floor there is a bit more space so more battery storage potential and that means great range overall, and the estate deals with rear end weight much better from my own experience of loading mine up :)

Being front wheel drive you will have to retain the gearbox of course which will sap a little power but unless you are into major engineering there is no alternative. You will also need to provide an electric drive for the hydraulic pump unless you could adapt a C5 one which would probably be easier.

There is also the matter of heating unless you are going to install a wood burner, the auxiliary heater from a C5 might be usable but its 12 volts at about 100 amps of course so might not harmonise with the rest of the system.

An interesting project. The estate has loads of room and is a very practical car, I used one for work for 15 years or so but the hatch has a very big boot so I am sure you could install some batteries there and some more in the space left by the engine.

I will be interested to watch developments.

A pair of motors would solve the front wheel drive issue, maybe, if space/position allows. Or acquire a good, small old-fashioned rear diff from somewhere.
Peter's idea of a C5 hydraulic pump is a good one. I'm guessing they're reliable...

The drive of a Leaf is designed to look and bolt on like any fwd car, it even looks like a normal engine and gear box is a very nice unit that includes the converter and charger, and with about 100bhp and in a xm there should be plenty of poke (no gearbox too). I always liked the fact that the mechanical side of things looks like pretty much a bolt-on solution if you decide to "hybridise" the driveshafts. The accumulator is 1m wide by 1.5 long, and if you like electronics could be made much smaller by re-engineering the packaging so would definitely fit under the boot getting rid of the spare tyre.

I see what you mean about the Leaf's power unit (plenty of pics on Google images) - very much looking like a typical FWD engine lump, and with built-in reduction gearing/driveshaft output. Clever, and able to be dropped into fairly conventional engine bays.
