Aline roads are generally not very steep, they just go on for a bit.

There is no reason your car should fail on this trip any more than any other reasonable run.

Thanks @dieselman. I think I'm going to opt for a sensible service, get the brakes checked out and then embrace the adventure!

This weekends jobs done. Cleaned up the connections on the co-pilots door and fixed his interior handle trim which had been hanging off delicately.

Turns out just needs a bloody good thump to attach the clips.
Central locking seems to be working again but feels a little temperamental since reattaching the rods to the handle and lock button.

Unfortunately during the work the door lock buttons fragile clip broke off but seems to be holding just.

6 speaker audio has been resumed with the help of two £10 replacement speakers from Halfords.

New jobs added this week now though are the left rear tailgate strut popped out. Corrosion around the lower joint means it now reminds me of when I dislocated shoulder I once had. It goes in and holds but is liable to just pop out at any minute. The retaining clips seem futile. Seems like time for a new eBay search for decent condition replacement strut. Till then I might be carrying a broom handle to support it if it gets worse. It's surprising how heavy the tailgate is!

Garage are on holiday till next week so I'm going to be cutting things a little bit fine but I've scaled back my ambitions anyway. Time and money don't allow for an engine rebuild (this was meant to be a cheap little getaway week!)

Hi Paul

Locking on strut ends can wear badly and the ball fixing on the car will need a clean up.
Secondhand struts are not currently the best option IMHO.
New tailgate struts are available.
Ebay item 322358362497 £23inc for a pair.

Bonnet & estate tailgate sets can also be found on ebay for similar prices.

Wow thanks for the struts link. Ordering tonight. With new ones they might even be a bit more springy on the way up. Plus another job I feel capable of undertaking myself.

More useful eBay links.

If you want to upgrade to after market speakers you can either break off and resolder the wiring harnesses or just buy these which are way simpler.

For those annoying snapped door trim clips. These replacements worked fine. A little flimsy but with a bag full of them you can afford to break a few in the process. I prefer these to snap than the fixings on the door card to rip off.

Just what I wanted to suggest, there have to be local suppliers where you can go and buy any clip with a sample in hand, practically in bulk. I know I have a couple around here... Or try Ali...

Just to say thanks xmclusive on the tip on the struts. Arrived Monday and fitted a treat. Lovely springy boot action now.

Other updates - door reassembled everything looking good at first but after everything back on central unlocky locking came back. Looks like I'll have to try for another new lock. It worked fine though with the door and rods detached. Could tension on the rods be the cause?? Well that can wait, detached the door wiring loom for now.

One upside to that story in the process of replacing the door I snapped a tab on the door button - it's ok it gets better. Miraculously on eBay someone is supplying just the bits that slide in and grip the rod. They're taller than the origins and they make the button not quite flush but with a Stanley knife probably could be fashioned into the perfect fix.

On the mechanical front. Nothing new. The garage was on holiday for two weeks. Going in next week Tuesday (nothing like cutting it fine). Too late for anything that's likely to disturb a can of worms so opted for just a good brakes check, fluid checks (transmission fluid at the rear was mentioned, new to me??).

Now having experienced hot weather in the last day or two and seen what temps are like where we are headed I have realized I really want to go for the Air Con so that's my wildcard for the garage to try. They have the R12 substitute and gear so if it's just the condenser I may get lucky although I doubt it's worked for many a year and so would be somewhat of a miracle. If they pull it off in the 3 days before we set sail Friday morning.
