2.1 TD S2 VSX estate project
I guess this is the place to start waffling anout the project?
Its a none running 2.1 on 90k that needs a small amount of sill work. Not an issue.
First job is the lack of running. Ive narrowed this down to a bad pump. Its one of the last ones running a Bosch system. And it appears its another case of bad veg oil. I hate the stuff. But i know others love it. The pump just isnt doing anything, even after removing the stop solanoid.
Very fiddly just to remove that. I was hoping for spurts of life and annoyed neighbours on sun once the plunger had been removed. But no. Its just a slight weap of fuel from the loose injector pipe.
Ive found the rebuild guide in the technical section and am just trying to find the correct seals. Im assuming its either a snapped key on the pump shaft, or an internal veg oil blockage. As the fuel smells of teak oil, i suspect its that. Never rebuilt a fuel pump before. How hard can it be?
Bits still required are:-
Estate wiper arm
Pump seals
Parts located
Door glass and fittings
Indicator stalk.

There are probably a few of these pumps still about on the earlier 1.9 XUD engines, the fueling can be fairly easily be adjusted, a scrap Xantia, 405 or ZX might supply one. Pity, I scrapped several of these a few years ago.

Have you tried heating the pump body to thin the veg oil?
If the pump is toast, I have a fully working one available.

Theres just no pressure. Ive pushed diesel through it. Just dribbles fuel so zero pressure. Its either not turning with the pulley or its got something blocked internally.

As Dieselman implies, with the cold temperatures we currently enjoy, your veg oil may be as viscous as soft cheese!

I suspect it needs a manual clean out. I looked at in on quite a warm day. But i will get the hot air gun on it just in case its this. To add tonthe story behind the car. It was taken off the road 8 years ago as it suddenly stopped. The belts etc are fine, and there is power to the stop solanoid. No fuel was flowing, so i suspected a dodgy solanoid. Which is why ive stripped it as i have. As it smelt of teak oil, im guessing its either waxed or fatted up inside or something has snapped internally.

Re: 2.1 TD S2 VSX estate project
Before you lay the blame solely on the pump.....undo the banjo on the inlet and try priming from the filter.....the blockage might start further back in the system.
The Bosch pumps are pretty bulletproof so an internal breakage is unlikely....if it isn't leaking I'd be reluctant to split it. Having said that, they can be taken apart and reassembled with patience and care but be prepared for components flying everywhere when disassembling.
Veg can coagulate to a gummy gel over time if it was being run on that at the time it stopped. The filter and inlet pipe will provide clues in this respect.
Best of luck and please let us know how you get on. Rodders.

Ive had the filter out. Was clean and no gum. Put a new one in anyway. Been feeding it from a can to eliminate the rest of the fuel system. The primer pump appears fine and pumps really well. Its baffling me why its just not doing anything. Awaiting the weather improving before I look at it again. I want to take it to the Northern Rally if i can this year. So will be having a day a week on it as weather allows.
