That rubber seal was stuck at the very end of a circuit, if it could of just got into the shuttle valve it would have been exhausted out into the differential casing and run back at the bottom of the box into the filter, where it would have stayed.
This gearbox is really fighting you isn't it

I think that your fears of major mechanical issues are probably pessimistic.

Im sure Mathew doesn't think so but i find that shred of rubber hilarious, if you laid that sliver of seal in the governor body oil gallery, wanting it to block the oil way, i bet there is no way it would block, 999 times out of a 1000 it would pass through but this one time............

It was quite a big piece of rubber seal Dean and I guess the oil pressure is bound to suck it through the governor body to where it lodged at the end of the channel. I can now report that I have dropped the oil and the colour is good with no debris of any kind or smell of burnt clutch pads! It has also been possible to speak to the mechanic, who advised me to recheck the governor after the disturbance, while acknowledging with reverse gear intact a broken seal or blockage should not cause loss of all forward drive. The consensus seems to be that either the governor or valve block are the cause of the issue. I myself feel fairly confident that the governor is now good and am more inclined to pull and change the valve block, which as I recall is a slightly easier task, with a spare known good V6 gearbox block waiting in my garage! On my other car I had the exact same experience after the first refit, with the box working for a very short time and then loosing drive and a stuck valve was found. Any further comments would be welcomed. With regards, Matthew T.

A possible cause of loss of forward drive, but reverse unaffected is either the 3-4 or 4-3 traction valves have stuck in the valve body.

Thanks Will, but would that also remove first and second gears? With regards, Matthew T.

I cannot see how a Governor could prevent forward drive engagement as it is effectivly a road speed sensor, you could have a governor fault that prevents an upshift from 1st or prevents reverse selection so the valve block is the most likely culprit, certainly less grunting to change the valve block than governor, good luck with it.

That is further helpful advice chaps and I attach a copy of the manual page to which Will refers. I hope to investigate further on Thursday or Friday this week when the weather forecast is good. I did not mention before but after I lost forward drive I then had to reverse the car home about half a mile along a dark lane - not a nice experience! With regards, Matthew T.
