Many thanks for your comments Russ and the last rebuild initially cost me around £900 so I was hoping for something nearer £1,000! It is either spending the money, risking another box or scrapping the car that would be a shame given other benefits! I think I would have to get the other box rebuilt to be safe, so there would be no saving as you suggest. I understand that the original box had been previously repaired after failure of the t/c, so probably either lubrication or assembly issues must be to blame! Regards, Matthew T.

If your spare box has only normal wear, it should be significantly cheaper to rebuild.

Many thanks Mike, although I think the replacement of all clutch plates and seals would be necessary and/or advisable in either case when the boxes are rebuilt? With regards, Matthew T.

If the transmission has never been abused, the clutch plates should be OK for reuse (as they normally operate with no slip). Talk to you rebuilder, he will have more experience.

Thanks again Mike and I will certainly check with the garage, while I understand that the main cost is in the labour charge. With regards, Matthew T.

If it has eaten a clutch plate then they have to strip the box right down and clean it all out, especially the valve block, it could have been a bad clutch slave seal or incorrectly shimmed, obviously the repair agent will know but unless you completely rebuild the box with all new bushes, springs and seals there will always be a chance of failure and even then i have seen cluch baskets split on the retaining clip groove of their own accord later down the line.

All the boxes i have stripped have shown no clutch wear at all really, it is only when something fails allowing the clutch to slip that they get destroyed quicky, overheating the basket and sending debris and burnt oil to every part of the system.

If i were you i would do the full rebuild as advised by the experts and save the OK box for a rainy day, but then it's not my £1440!

Good luck with it Matthew

Many thanks for your helpful advise Dean and the possibility of incorrect shimming during the last rebuild was originally suggested by my local specialist! I am also pleased to confirm that after taking several very deep breaths I have done as you suggested and opted to rebuild the original box! Before making the decision I checked whether there would be any saving in rebuilding a 'working' box, but even if only some new parts were required it would be still be necessary to purchase complete sets of plates and seals and the labour cost would not change. I really cannot take the risk of fitting an untried and unknown box after previous experience and hopefully only one removal and refitting will be needed. All being well the restored gearbox will be ready for collection this time next week. With regards, Matthew T.

I think that is a wise decision and probably what I would do. A lot of money but peace of mind is priceless!

Many thanks Russ and there is no turning back now! Fortunately I did not pay much for the car and there are no garage bills to remove and refit! With regards, Matthew T.

I made a little more progress on the weekend while awaiting return of the gearbox. The engine bay has been cleaned and subframe coated with waxoil where corroded and a number of other small jobs attended. I took the opportunity to replace the three front suspension spheres with recharged units and two originals were found ruptured and full of oil! The steering rack ram plastic shroud was missing and I also removed and waxoiled the heat shield around the pinion valve. On the engine it was necessary to strip the steel sump plate for repair and I have also removed, checked and refitted the crankshaft-torque convertor flex plate and the starter ring after previous experience! Hopefully the box can be collected later this week and refitting begun! Regards, Matthew T.
