Chalk and cheese Citroen XMs
White chalk: 2.0 turbo petrol, manual, budget spec, RHD
Blue cheese: 3.0 V6 petrol, auto, top spec, LHD diravi
Nominally the same car, but two very different driving experiences.
The blue one was imported just this weekend from Frankfurt

Can anyone tell me where to find the engine number on a PRV V6? I need to find it to apply for UK registration and it doesn't appear on the German registration document I've got.

The engine number is on an alloy plate riveted to the timing end of the rear bank in the V, so under the intake manifold, it is possible to see but only if the engine is really clean.

Nice purchase btw, i hope you enjoy it.

Knew I had a photo, it's not riveted, I'm thinking of the XU engine, it is a casting in the block which is etched with the engine number, you can see them on the inside left of the of the rear bank (front left looking at photo) two rectangular pads, the larger pad has the engine number the smaller one the engine variant

Thanks Dean, I think I see where you mean in the photo. I'll have a look when I get home from work tomorrow.

I certainly enjoyed the drive back from Frankfurt. I didn't go mad on the autobahn but it was rock steady and still accelerating well at a speed I'll never do in the UK.

Very helpful having a close up of the engine number, to see the format of what I am looking for. With the plastic engine cover removed I had a direct view of the number. A rub with an oily tissue attached to the end of a stick made the numbers about visible. As best I could tell, it seemed to read 10FVSN 0023726. I wasn't entirely sure about the 1 and the S , but the rest seemed clear enough.

I was delighted to hear you have taken the plunge and acquired a lhd V6 Derek and well done that man!! The car does look like a nice example and please post up some further details and photos in due course. It would also be great to see you with the car when next in Norfolk! With regards, Matthew T.

I was waiting for you to spot my post Matthew! I figured I needed to get a LHD V6 before Brexit. This one was based 10 minutes drive away from Frankfurt airport, so it was easy to view flying from Manchester. And easy to collect driving home via the Rotterdam - Hull overnight ferry. I figured if I didn't go for this one I never would. It's very attractive inside in blue Alcantara. I'll put some more pics up when I get the chance to take some. And I will visit some time soonish, once it's registered - filling in the form is this evening's job. I've been making repeated trips to Norfolk to visit my Mum, who has not been well. I decided there's nothing wrong with my white XM that an auto box, diravi steering and aircon wouldn't fix. The 2.0turbo is great, goes really well, I just prefer a more relaxed driving style. The 2.0 turbo is now for sale on car and classic.

Sorry to bring the topic back from the dead, but I have small engine number puzzle on my XM.

Engine is PRV V6 3.0 SFZ 1975 ccm engine (ZPJ). My XM has engine number that starts with 1FV540***, while some others have engine numbers that start with 1FV2500***, 1FV2300*** etc, so my engine seems to miss one zero digit. Does anyone have XM with PRV engine so I can compare numbers and find out what is the deal?
It's sure that engine number is original, and by checking service.citroen it shows car should have 10FV5400*** engine number, so I can't trust it since for every car that has 1FV*** engine database shows it should have 10FV*** number. As much as I managed to find out, 2963 ccm engines (UFZ/UFY) do have 10FV*** number form.

Thanks!

I wouldn't be too bothered about an indistinguishable digit in the first sequence, more important is knowing the actual serial number last digits, as modifications are from set series numbers.

I think the different prefixes are down to engine versions, S6A, SFZ, SKZ and whether they were originally setup for manual, or automatic gearbox and which country they were sold into, as pollution specifications vary.
A modification might apply to all engines, but the serial numbers for manual and auto gearbox fitmets are many thousands apart, but the date of change is the same.
e.g. Timing ccover changed at Rp5169 (3/1/91), but engine numbers were 17102 (manual), 29647 (auto), 1461 (JPJ4)
All SFZ are 2975cc.
S6A engines are 15-04 emissions (no cat), SFZ engines are 15-05 emissions (cat).

The information you need regarding engine types is shown on P10 in the Russek manual linked in Flegmaatikkos' post.
