George's "Poole" 1993 2.1td SED manual

Post by jorgy » Mon Nov 30, 2009 1:19 am

She's at her new home!!! :P

Trip no probs at all -Poole-Glasgow 10hrs at 60-70mph *on speedo*, with a few 50mph road-works sections, some bit slower becaue of fog when entering Scotland, and 4 stops-. Engine looks perfect, smooth power delivery :) , silent :) , more than adequate performance in within-gear acceleration :) (but have never pressed more than half-way the turbo-boost gauge, curious to see how it's on full boost), old tyres made it no probs. Temp was steady at 75-76C on motorway. At 60-70mph it revs at about 2,200rpm which is...nice -the V6 12v Manual is at about 3,000 there.

Has passed 80,000 miles during this trip -mileage verifiable from all MOTs present-. No service history though, just 1-2 receipts. But from car-book I can see it's been serviced from Citroen up to about 70k, then passed to 2nd owner that did 10k, then me.

You can feel the low mileage on the interior -the state of the leather is noticeably different than with my 170k V6. Not looks-wise only (it's not glossy but matt), but talking of cushion firmness -I can now imagine better how a new XM must have been. Even the electric armrest cushion is taught and firm. You can feel the difference in the various switches also. Also, the alloy wheels are like new.

Used about 9 gallons for 520 miles which is 58mpg, which is too good to be true, must have some error in the gallons. Although it is *precisely* what Citroen specifies for such and S1 XM at 56pmh steady (4.9lt/100km at 90km/h). Have to say I've only used turbo boost on maybe 20 occasions in whole trip, and those times never gone more than half-way past the middle on boost gauge. The rest of time boost gauge was "sleeping" at far left of range -wanted to make sure car would make it to Scotland!

Wonder what rust condition we'll find when we put it up the ramps -from a quick look at spare wheel area, it looks good. Strut tops look a bit better for rust than the Stratford-2lt ones, and rubber doesn't appear tired (like on my v6, where the o/s sphere is very near to touching the firewall, although many V6s are like that). Have driven back on my strut-top protectors anyway (I just put them on in 10' before I set off), so no worries till I can look into that.

Only unexpected faults are: right-hand trip computer is o/s, radio is also o/s. More serious: brake valve seems to leak alot, u can make the rear quickly sink a few cms by pressing the brakes. Brakes need quote a force to be effective, reminds me of a no-servo car??? Will immediately put it on Hydranet2000 as a first measure, to see what changes this will bring.

Going in for service this week hopefully, will report more later!!!

THANKS TO EVERYBODY THAT HELPED ME IN THE QUEST FOR AN XM, BOTH FOR THIS AND FOR THE PREVIOUS ONE!!!

cheers
George

Looks really nice George.

A much better choice than the Stratford car.

Being a 2.1 it won't have a trip computer, it just has a clock and outside temp display.

My 2.1 has a trip computer Does it not depend on the injection pump.

With yours being a 1998 Norman, I suspect it will have the electronic epic, so you would be able to have a trip computer like that.

My 2.1 has a manual bosch pump, and no trip computer, is it possible to retrofit one to a car with a manual pump? I have been reading about it on the French Planete Citroen forum, and it is possible if you have all the bits needed to convert it over, namely the wiper stalk with the button on it for the trip computer, the specific readout display, the circuit that attahces to the fuel guage part of the clocks, and the lifter unit in the tank.

But they don't say if you can do it with a manual pump car. I have all the bits I need from the Onyx I am breaking.

Well done Goerge

I'm pleased that there is someone else out there that appreciates the virtues of the 2.1 manual. :D I can confirm that you don't have a trip computer, this requires an electronic pump which only the late ones have - and I know which I prefer! Did you see the price that the 2.1 estate went for :o makes yours look a real bargain. :D Your fuel consumption sounds about right for the speed you were driving at, I think a few of our number ar rather sceptical about the 2.1 potential fuel economy, they certainly do reward gentle driving.

Enjoy

I thought I was doing well getting 41mpg out of my auto 2.1 TD, then again, driving at 75 on the motorway, and a bit of start stop town work, it isn't tooo bad I suppose.

Driving at that speed with an auto I would think 41 mpg sounds pretty good Robert. Its all down driving style really, if you wear out tyres and brakes that will be reflected in your fuel usage. My front tyres last about 30k but I seldom go above 60 mph and dont corner hard and use my brakes only when essential, my average consumption is always mid 40s with 50+ on a longish trip. I know a lot of people would be bored with that, I did my 'boy racing' when I was young. :x I'm much more relaxed now 8-) :?
