Update on the "Poole" XM: passed it's MOT last week! :D

-fail items: change my Barry-boy blue number-plate leds with white ones
-advisories: none!

+11k troublefree miles since purchased last November. Will celebrate its anniversary with... a good wash, now the freeze is gone.

Now showing 91k, time for another oil+filter change.

Think I got a gem of an XM, hope it stays like that!

...And a photo from the summer -please Winter, GO AWAY !!!!

Nice to hear Jorgy, and it's looking good too. I actually like the S2 grille and over-large badges, but prefer the rest of an XM as Series1.
Incidentally, how is the fuel economy working out for you, especially compared to the 3.0 petrol.

My big day is Wednesday morning at 8:00am. I'm pretty sure it will pick up an advisory for brake pad wear cables broken, but hopefully will be Ok otherwise...it's -6c, so too cold to do anything now..

Thanks Peter.
The dent is still there, untouched. I will deal with that next summer, and maybe also decide to give that side's 3 rearmost panels a paintjob like the rest of the car has received in May 09. Would like to assess the durability of the other painted panels for a while. For now, it's been perfect.

Sorry about that George :D What reminded me is that this very nice - otherwise 406 I bought has a dirty great dent in the sill.

Thanks D -it's actually an S1 grille -the badge is, I think, for the rear of a Jumper or so. I do miss the S1 bumper sometimes, but as I also have my completely standard S1.5 V6 to look at... ;)

Some things to note:

-manual gearbox
-My commute is very standard: 60 miles/day, of which all is open motorway @70-80mph and 6 miles is city centre.
-I'm not trying to save fuel at all; I'm pleasing myself whenever there's a chance to!
-I always go for £40 (not 40lt) of diesel each time

-As of late September, all figures are for carrying 2 passengers every single time!

-Tyres are Michelin Energy Saver (195/65) which I'm very happy with in every respect, probably the best overall tyres I've tried in my lifetime. Wear seems to be very small too after 11k -had a look the other day.
-Using standard Asda diesel 9 out of 10 times
-The lower figure at the last observation is due to putting £80 and mainly bec I started leaving the car warm up for 5-10 mins before I go every morning.
-It took me some time to learn to using the turbo (is my 1st), its performace is quite different than a n/a car. It's very pleasant to drive in 9/10 of occassions.
-From all this, it looks like Cits official figure for the 90kmh/56mph cycle of 4.9lt/100km/57mpg would be achievable whenever one wanted!
-The V6 12v manual was doing 28mpg at best under same conditions -although I tended to stay nearer to 80mph+ with that one, without any perceived effort (the 2.1td engine becomes quite audible after 3,000rpm (about 70mph) and I don't feel like going much faster), and I suspected a slow lambda sensor on the V6 too -it should be doing slightly better under Cit figures -more like 30mpg, but not better than that anyway.

Good luck to you for Wednesday!

That sounds about right, brilliant cars for their size, the 2.1 engine will return better mpg than the 1.9s in most applications, much more efficient engine due to three valves per cylinder and the terrific low down torque. A steady poodle to Scotland will give me 55 mpg but otherwise figures about the same as yours.

Funny u should say about the torque Peter, I've been thinking about it lately.

When I first got the 2.1, the low end torque (=below 1,500rpm) was my biggest dissapointment coming from a 12v V6 Manual. I couldn't do what I was used to doing routinely with the V6 e.g. exiting a tight uphill corner in 2nd from idling rpm -I almost stalled the 2.1 a couple of times while adapting to it. This was annoying in dense city traffic, as I tend to crawl in as low rpm as possible, engine allowing. I also remember being very annoyed in a jammed motoway scenario, where u do start-stop all the time and crawl at almost idling speeds -the 2.1 just wouldn't get moving, I felt a complete hollowness between idle and 1,500 or so. Lots of vibration also -like, the whole cabin resonating.

But lately I've found myself doing all that with the 2.1 and thinking "hmmm good low end torque" as if I was re-discovering the car!!

Sure, all these judgements are very biased by habit and memory defects, but I'm sure my 2.1 is now much better in these tasks than when I first got it. Could be various things, e.g from a general freeing up of many bits and pieces after having sat for 5 years, to the brakes freeing up -I had evidence that they were lazy to release and also of intermittent severe assymetrical braking (left/right), and only lately these symptoms have dissapeared -I was actually looking forward to hear the braking records from the MOT, but nothing noticeable was reported.

This would fit with the fact that my consumption trend seems to be downwards, while u'd expect the opposite happening as u move into wintertime.

Go find, only sure thing is that now I'd totally subscribe to the 2.1td XM having good low-end torque.

This is not to say it is as driveable as the manual 12v V6 down there -it still prefers a full-throttle to get moving asap from a standstill (this is most noticeable when pulling off into a fast roundabout), but then nobody expects an off-boost 2.1 turbo to be like a n/a low-end-biased 3,000cc! What I'd say is the 2.1td is "very sufficient" while the 3lt "more than sufficient" (and you pay it dearly) .

Note, this is all with the EGR in place.

The low down torque may have improved as the rings have seated properly again.
