M 95 S2 2.1td Autobox swap plus OTHER work

OK. I've started working on a 2.1td auto. 265k but with no forward drive. The box has been fairly well looked after.. Well to get to 265k it has to of been.. And the car has some sentimental attachment for the owner.. After owning it for some time.

Anyway. I sourced a replacement box.. But after reading mtxm and deans blogs on valve blocks etc it was worth removing the block for investigation..

I managed this today.. And took the plates off the sides to see what the block valves were like..

Firstly the valve lock had the vac/pressure pipe on it. It's connected to the td inlet where the boost pressure guage goes on S1 cars

You can see the pipe at the bottom. They are push fits.

All looks pretty clean in there..

And there for us is the bad news.. The plate sprung off.. With zero crap in there and no signs of Any dirt. All valves were free and more so for the milage no play between valves and bores.. So sadly not a sticky valve issue.

So.. I now assume its box out now then..

The upper set of valves were also nice and free..

Look all clean to me...

And upper set of valves. I assume the one with the spring off should NOT able to come out. It wouldn't anyway..

My valve block issue was not obviously apparent when I removed the valves Paul, although normal service was restored after refitting, so you might just be lucky! Failing that I would be pulling the governor next. With regards, Matthew T.

Well to be honest mathew.. The car is at such stage that one exhaust manifold to pipe bolt to do.. Bottom hose at back lower of engine.. And regulator and flow divider returns are all that need removing to get the whole lot out...

Well I opted to take the whole lot out. Which turned out to be a damm good idea. As the steering rack boots were shot as also were the pas ram bush's. So I found a decent rack and swapped that over. While the lot was out we fitted a new cam belt and water pump.. And also there was play in the half shaft bearing.. All far easyer to do while it was out.

Its back in now and drive shafts and exhaust bolted up.. Rear water hoses connected up.. Lhm tank on.. So progress is comming along.

I'm gonna retain the auto box external rad cooler. I think even though it takes up a bit more space behind the rads it's worth the extra cooling assistance..

Should not be too long now and we shall find out if she goes forward again. The box happens to have fluid in it however a fluid drain and swap is on the cards. No doubt all the oil is in the dump now so a good idea to do it..

Im amoungst everything else thats been going on with house moves and purchasing, I also managed an autobox swap on a 1995 M reg 2.1 td auto.

The owner sold the car, but sentimetnal attachments lurd the car back in to owner ship however at 265k the box decided it was game over, initally starting with a slip in 1st it eventually and slowly lost forward drive, only going forward only. So, after a short while we manged to source another box, however it is strickly an unknown qty..

So the car..

I've come to the conclusion that many of our auto boxes are "strickly an unknown qty.." :? :?

Theres pictures to come to the intro post, but my sony refuses to talk to the laptop, so im having to resort to sending 3 at a time in an email to myself so i can down load them to the laptop and insert them in after..

When this second box "Stops" we have decided the car will get a full conversion, to a 2.0 hdi 8v 110 with autobox that we know as we used it in a C5 for 12 months..

That would be an interesting conversion.
Does the Hdi ECU and gearbox ECU use CAN bus, if so, what would need to be transferred with it to make it run?
Would it need the body control module, ignition switch and ABS, or can it function with it's own CAN and the appropriate 120 ohm terminators.

Initially I was advised to check out the valve block, as it was easilly enough to look at, so we stripped the area down and got the cover off..

Removed the valve block and took it apart, only to find absolutley nothing wrong with it, no stuck valves, nothing broken.. so concluded it wasnt that and decided its front off and box swap..

So, the front end off and it all came off fairly easilly too, drive shafts out, exhaust down pipe off and wiring disconnected from the useual areas, lhm tank off, battery box out.. rads off, water drain..

PICTURES TO BE ADDED, THEY ARE ALL TOO LARGE TO LINK IN... SLIGHTLY ANNOYING..
