on mine after reconnecting the battery i simply set the lock and alarm on the plip and then unlock on the plip. That resequences the alarm. The lights will stop flashing in any event in 20 mins.
Thats the way to do it when you have the plip. The siren yapping is a nice reminder of the correct procedure.

I have pulled the alarm fuse from my car when I have no working plip, reconnected the battery, and on pushing the fuse back in normal service has been resumed. Its annoying that they have so much other stuff on the same fuse that you can't just leave it out permanently.

But, my white SX has been sounding it's alarm siren a lot recently, particularly after start up in the mornings .
I was wondering what happened with that car.

Good to hear it's back in action.
Hi Dieselman,
I forgot, you went to see it didn't you.
I'll post some pictures on here later .

I never thought of that  . I'll give it a try if the siren starts up again.

Well....

As a relative "Newbie", I have been interested in the comments in this thread as I encountered a disconcerting problem a couple of weeks ago on my white SX. Returning from Leeds (in the south) to my home in the north, I pulled up at traffic lights outside Harewood House and the alarm went doolally tap with lights flashing and hazards on full action. Fortunately, a previous owner had already disconected the siren or insanity would surely have followed! In the end, removing the mysterious plastic box in the passenger footwell restored peace, calm and tranquility to the world and the car has since driven with no other issues (apart, of course, from collapsing windows). Personally, I have no intention of reconnecting said black box as the fact that the siren was not functioning suggest other problems with the alarm system.

Having owned the car for a couple of months now, I think it's great in many respects: I love the styling and the comfort (it suits me better than my previous CXs and even my old Jag) and it is great for wafting around in. I do find it lacking in acceleration, but then my other car has 270 horses :P The XM has really become my transport of choice - I just need to find a loved diesel estate, then I can replace the Mitsubishi and upgrade to a V6 for me. A cunning plan - perhaps...

:o that's just down the road from me.
No wonder the alarm went loopy, it probably sensed another white XM nearby. That's probably why mine was playing up too

I don't mind though, I'm a Southerner :D .

Where are you in the North Rob?

A quick update on my alarm problem.
It hasn't given me any problems lately. The only thing that I've done to the car is tightened the alternator belt as it was squeeling when I started the engine.
Could this have been affecting the alarm?

Slipping belt = low battery voltage = iffy alarm.

If truth be told, I'm really a southerner too. I'm a Gloucestershire lad by birth and my parents still live around Stroud (the world centre for BXs it seems) but I have been up here in the north-east since 1973, living at Middleton St George for about 27 years now. Middle daughter (third born) is at university in Leeds, so I pop south from time to time and prefer to go by XM although I was there today in the VR4 as I had to take step ladders for DIY stuff. I really do want an XM estate!

Gloucestershire is indeed a hot bed of Citroens - BXs, 2CVs, even XMs, the odd CX and so on - there's an E CX down at the bottom of Hyde Hill parked up with a 2CV and occasionally a BX.

I had the exact same problem today, I disconnected the battery & alarm & (newly working! :) headlamps went off.

As I don't have a plipper, just the key I couldn't switch it off, tried turning ignition & entering security code on the keypad, to no avail.

Read the Citroen XM user manual that came with the car, it says to turn it off manually you need to turn key in ignition & press & hold the alarm button on the dash WITIN 10 SECONDS of it going off. If it doesn't work 1st time around, wait 30 seconds for the alarm to stop & go off again & try the above again.

Worked for me after 2 go's.

Good luck
Nige
