Fuel economy on a 2.5 VSX

Off topic chat about anything you like. Doesn't have to be about XMs (though they will inevitibly come up!). You can even discuss non-Citroens :o in here!

I have noticed I can get even better mpg if I drive it manually instead of cruise control.

Its rather boring sticking to 70mph in a car like this though. I've shocked myself a couple of times when I looked at the speedo to find I was doing in excess of 100mph (hope theres no plod lurking on here!) but it felt like I was doing what normally feels like 70!

Cruise control is good for nice clear straight level motorways but you don't get many of those to the pound in the uk! Took me 6 hours to travel from Leicester to Surrey on Monday, due to an accident between J16 & J15a of the M1 had to do a detour then when I finally got back to the M1 it was limited to 50mph due to "roadworks" all 3 lanes in use & not a bloody workman in sight! M25 was no different, 50mph limit most of the way :(

Pleased that you are enjoying you 2.5 XM endorfin.
I use the cruise a fair amount and have not noticed an fuel difference.
That might be due to my driving though.
I took the head off a spare 2.5 engine last night that had done 150k.
I was surprised how little carbon was present as most of it wiped off with a rag.
This on an engine that allegedly the previous owner had abused (35k with no servicing) so I was breaking it down for spares.

The best feature I found on the cruise on the 2.5 was that it could be engaged on third, fourth or fifth. So in a 30 Zone in third cruise could be engaged to ensure no speeding tickets.

On the C5 you could only use cruise on fourth and fifth which due to the high gearing even using it at 40mph was tricky due to the low revs.

Cruise used properly will return better MPG. However its harder work than driveing manually as you really have to concertrate on when to change lane to avoid having to slow down to wait for the passing cars to go by before overtaking slower traffic. If you do slow, wiat for the traffic to go by andthen resume cruise it will negate any MPG improvements

Well I find if I manually resume the speed I was travelling at (70mph) before I was forced to move over or slow down then once I was back at that speed I would resume the cruise control. Like someone else said here if you leave it to cruise control the computer will accelerate flat out to get to 70mph then cut off whereas if you do it yourself you use less fuel. Cruise control & human judgement together works far better. The main advantage of having cruise control whilst trying to save fuel is your foot doesn't get tired and you can keep your eyes on the road & your mirrors rather than keeping an eye on the speedo!

With the 2.5 its so torquey I can leave it in 5th at 30 & 40mph, almost like having an auto.

When possible I use the cruise switch to gradually drop the selected speed to fit in with traffic then when clear slowly nudge it back to the 75 setting.

Yeah thats it.

Its always interesting to see the miles remaining increase in accordance with your driving style....at one point I had 548 miles remaining when the fuel gauge was at the halfway mark. Would be great if I could have gotten 1100 miles from a full tank, but never in the real world!
