Stop light & ABS light

Off topic chat about anything you like. Doesn't have to be about XMs (though they will inevitibly come up!). You can even discuss non-Citroens :o in here!

It does have aircon & climate control. Doesn't blow cold though despite my doing a DIY regas last year.

I think I've located the thermostats, they seem to be the type where you have to replace them complete with the housing. So what does it mean with the rad hoses being hot & slightly warm, thought they would both would have been hot if there wasn't a problem?

It sounds like coolant isn't circulating, either due to the thermostat or water pump being faulty.

If this was the case wouldn't it have overheated by now, it isn't exactly overheating, max temp it reaches seems to be 95c when driving at speed?

There are TWO cooling circuits on a 2.5 which is why there are 2 thermostats.
The small rad takes a connection at the middle of the main rad and connection back to the block using the small stat.
For correct temperature running both circuits must be in good order.
Even crap between the two rads can prevent both cooling properly.
Noz on the other forum has copious posts on trying to work out how this odd system actually works.
As we do not fully understand the system then fault finding is a bit hit and miss.
Quite a few 2.5's have been run long term at 95. Not thought to be a problem unless you tow hard.
The overheating risk mainly comes from coolant leakage or inadequate bleeding.
Header tank extender is essential while bleeding the coolant.
Air trapped in the head can stop cooling of the valve seats. That leads to valve seat cracking.
A good few 2.5 heads are found to be too cracked to refurbish from this.
Makes buying spare heads and engines a bit of a lottery.

Where is this small rad?

I've ordered a new main thermostat but can't seem to find a supplier for the small one. I'm going to set aside a day to flush the radiator & the head when I've removed the thermostats and hopefully this will cure the problem of the slight overheating issue.

Still doesn't really explain the 'Stop' warning light that keeps flickering on. Sometimes its accompanied with 'high water pressure, slow down' even when cold on start up and not moving. Could it be the two screw in sensors?

Where are the thermostats located and are they difficult to change on the 2.5, if not I may as well change them as a matter of course. I flushed the radiator last year although I didn't reverse flush it.
hi just to let you know last nov/dec i had the red stop light on the dash light up temperature on car all normal called the RAC out but couldn,t find a fault 2wks later the heater burnt out, ? a thermostat burnt out car fan does also have aircon but never used it hope this might help ? faulty thermostat?

Small rad is clipped and bolted to the front of the main rad.
Makes taking the rad pair out real hard work.
For stats try Redline car parts Ebay items 120654214382 & 290506593085.
The adverts also list most of the Non OE part numbers for the stats.
If you do find you need a water pump then check the type fitted.
There is an early type (4 rib belt) and a late type (3 rib belt).

Is that small rad for the aircon?

No. It hangs on the front of the main rad and that lot sits behind any aircon rad.
If you release the slam panel springs that hold the main rad you should be able to ease it back just enough to see the top of the small rad.
Have a care not to puncture the main rad on the rubbish at the front of the engine.
The shortish life and high price of the two coolant rads is one of the reasons many owners avoid 2.5 XM's.
Telling it for real like this is one of the ways I keep the price of 2.5's at a realistic purchaseable level.
How else can you buy £600 worth of good secondhand spares for less than 200 quid.
Long gone are the days when I kept XM's with lots of different engine types.
Stop light is most likely one of the sensors or a high resistance wire.
