Cheap insurance for XM as second car?

Post by ash2020 » Fri May 06, 2011 5:55 pm

Hi all.
Haven't been here for months because I've been lurking about in VW T4 forums! I bought a T4 van in order to tow my heavy boat and trailer and SORNd the XM. However, now I've found that I can't bring myself to sell it and I desperately want to get it back on the road as a second car.
Trouble is, of course, all my no claims is used on the van policy. Any ideas where I can get a cheap second policy. I've tried one or two multi car policies but they're a joke. Don't mind third party only.
Cheers

Always worth ask a broker to quote.
They usually can get an introductory first year discount that mirrors your current bonus on the van.
Their advantage is that they usually know which insurance companies are currently offering the best rates for your particular needs.

How about classic car insurance, the XM is accepted as a classic car by a few classic car insurance companies. Its meant to be fairly cheap.

I insured my Mk1 Granada on classic car insurance for £100 a year before I SORN'd it.

I use a classic policy for my XMs. Usually it comes in at the same price as with full no claims bonus (without having any on that policy) but it must be a second car, the mileage is restricted and has to be declared and you can't build up no claims bonus on that policy.

Hi Andrew,
Have you tried 'Admiral or Churchill ' insurance ?

As I found them very competitive (I'm with Admiral) for my XM 2.5TD VSX (@ 2k PA) and a Polo 1.4 SE TDI (@ 8k PA) mirrored full no claims discount, fully comp. protected no-claims bonus and additional legal cover on both for £397 (That was in Feb. this year) that cover could possibly be more now, as lot of friends have told me their insurance/renewals have gone up and its even for the same vehicle which are are now a year older too (So effectively the write off value is less) !

:)

Thanks for all the suggestions. I don't mind a limited mileage, so I could try that. If I could do both for less than 400 I'd be pleased but the van is a 2.5 TDI which might bump the price up.
I'm with Churchill at the moment so I'll have a go on Monday.
Thanks again
