Just to finish off the story --- after pratting about all week, on and off, without marked success, decided to bite the bullet and get a new assembly. Wow --- what a difference. Whole mechanism smooth as silk; proper suspension restored. As with many mechanical things, you tend not to realise how tired something has become until you replace it. Given it is permanently passing LHM and subject to continuous small movement when the car is in use, I remain curious as to why the original seized.
