Alarm, Immobiliser...or both?
I'm trying to understand what security if any my car is fitted with. Car is model year 1995 mk2 XM 2.1 TD Exclusive Auto.
It has the remote locking plip with the two buttons (I believe one is lock/unlock and the other, deadlock).
There is no keypad in the car.
I must have an alarm as the car has the seiren neutraliser under the bonnet and the volumetric switch on the main control panel. How do I tell if there is an immobiliser?
I only want to find this out for insurance purposes.
Thanks for any help in advance!
Rohan

I don't think you have an immobiliser if you don't have the keypad. There won't be one in your ignition key. Is the seiren neutraliser the thing in the front that you can put a key in? My new 2.1 has such a device that I had never seen before?

Yes, it is the thing that has a circular cover that can be removed, and the key then inserted and turned in it to switch off the alarm. I went outside to check.

Sounds like the car has the ultrasonics with the siren as you say but you'll
need a keypad to have the ECU immobilised. It's not the right era Citroen to
have the transponder chip in the key shank and aerial surround on the ignition
barrel which I believe the later cars had similar to that fitted to the Xantia.

I can confirm no immobiliser Rohan as the pump is un-armoured and the stop solenoid very visible! Hot-wiring a diesel of that era is a doddle but some measure of protection is offered by the bonnet being alarmed.
You can tell the bonnet alarm contact is good as the LH display will tell you when the bonnet is open.

Re: Alarm, Immobiliser...or both?
Hi Rohan
The siren is part of the alarm.
All Mk2 XM's are alarm fitted.
The version varies over the production run.
Under bonnet alarm siren isolation switch was fitted from start of Mk2 production (1994) until 1997.
The alarm still works and the headlights flash just no siren.
On models after 1997 the siren cannot be isolated.
Immobiliser is a separate system.
Not fitted to many of the earlier XM's.
No keypad usually means no immobiliser.
On some XM's there is a method to isolate then remove the keypad.
Some then fill the hole left with a plastic tray.
Such conversion is a reportable insurance issue.
As far as I am aware no diesel XM's got pump armouring.
Many did get code Immobilisers using the engine ECU's. (EPIC 2.1s & all 2.5's).
Just seen Jim's note on hot wiring.
This is actually very difficult with engine ECU code immobilisers.
Totally different from the crap design injector pump code immobilisers that eventually needed armouring.

Thanks for all of the info guys- that certainly makes things clear.

Well perhaps Jim it would, if it wasn't outputting its messages in Klingon at the moment!CitroJim wrote: You can tell the bonnet alarm contact is good as the LH display will tell you when the bonnet is open.

The message on the display can be in any desired language
according to the specific positions of different fuses.
My father's 2.1 is very apt warning him of various calamities
in French which is quite nice actually!

Once you've worked through Kev's guide, all should be good on the display front
