Buckled wheels! Vovlo alternative?

Post by lankytim » Fri Jan 23, 2015 9:27 pm

Hi all.

Good news, My XM passed it's MOT today! Bad news is that the mechanic tried to fit a pair of tyres and found the rear wheels to be bucked and unbalancable. I suspect the fronts will be bent too. They are the infamous "Exclusive" alloys that invariably go wonky.

Mt mate is breaking a Volvo V90 and if I'm very nice to him he may let me get my hands on them.

Will they fit OK? I'm pretty sure they are the FWD Volvo offset and 16"

Opinions?

Yep they should go straight on with maybe a tyre change to keep the overall diameter correct for speedo operation, what is the tyre size? rear arches are rather tight where offset is concerned but I can't see there is a problem.
What does your tyre guy mean by not being able to balance them? They can't all have taken a whack.

It was the rears, they couldn't be balanced and on inspection were found to be buckled. The fronts have a wobble which I thought would be a lost wheel weight but I now suspect will be a buckle. These rims are well known for bending for no reason.

Tim,
I have a set of alloys - one tyre isn't great and one has a puncture ... but alloys are fine.

Also a set of steels, no tyres - catch me here or on AS

Thanks for the offer, but I think I'm sorted now. I picked up the set of V90 wheels from my friend today. They have 205 55 16 tyres on, hopefully they will be a match for what's already fitted although 2 tyres need replacing soon.

One issue though, I need a set of steel wheel bolts now, the extended chrome type ones. I had 2 sets at one point and thought I'd never need them again and like an idiot binned them.

Anybody got a spare set?

I would be surprised if 9 series wheels fit due to the offset. Doesn't the XM need 850 wheels?

These are from a 960/v90, which use the FWD Volvo offset despite being RWD.

If you look at the links the wheels appear to be identical.

I think Lez Briddon fitted a set of those to his XM a few years ago, pics of it around somewhere.
