Oh dear, so Citroen were plagued by the Goddamit engine too then! Thought it was restricted to mitsi and Volvo that suffered those motors. From what I've read in Volvo circles the earlier version was not QUITE as troublesome, and the gumming up issues were largely reduced by driving hard as opposed to babying it for economy (don't think economy was all that affected by harder driving either). All in all it was known as an engine option to avoid, but if you found yourself lumbered with one then you could usually manage the faults by a combination of shorter oilchange intervals, heavy right foot and mostly, cleaning the intake/throttle body etc thoroughly at the start.

EGR responsible for inlet clag, loss of a couple of a couple of mpg, and sometimes full-throttle hiccups. Easily sorted, albeit with some NOx considerations, for the small number of who do.
DMFs have hit almost every diesel (and a couple of petrol, apparently) engine since the late '90s. Also sortable, thank goodness.
