Silly question but is the rad getting hot and the fans cutting in? If it's not bubbling up through the system is want to check them as it wouldn't be the first car to have strange cooling system issues when a thermostat or pump has failed. Especially given you've said it takes an age to get the heater matrix warm. Have you force filled the system and bled it as well as hat could explain the matrix if it's got a large air lock it won't get warm for ages

The rad is getting hot but I can't remember if the fans are kicking in. I haven't force filled the system but I did try to bleed it via the bleed valve behind the inlet manifold. TBH I haven't had much time to play with it.
