Correct badging for Citroen XM Estate 1995

Post by JK99 » Wed Oct 19, 2016 8:58 pm

Hi Gents

My XM Estate, 2.5 TD, has no badges at the back. I've tried to find out ,via the internet , what is the correct badging , but only got some verbal descriptions. Mine is a series 2, I believe, and I understand that, at the back, on the driver's side (LHD), it should say XM, whilst on the the other side it should say Citroen. Does anyone have a picture of how these badges look, so I can tell what is the font and what is the badge position? Also, I presume the badges are glued on, and not secured by screws?

JK99

PS If it helps, my reg no is M827 EWK

All 2.5's are Series 2. This is the correct rear badging (for both LHD and RHD):
http://www.wikiwand.com/en/Citro%C3%ABn_XM

Typeface for CITROEN is a private one (called Delpire - info on the web), created for Citroen, but GOTHAM BOLD is almost identical.
The XM is a styled logo, not a typeface, so far as I know.
All the car's badges are self-adhesive, rather than pegged.

>>> EDIT
Sorry, I missed that vital word Estate...

Shows additional badging that John refers to.

Hi JK99

All 2.5 TD Mk 2 XM estates supplied in the UK were VSX models.
Looking at the back on the left "citroen" and on the right "XM" at the same height and "VSX" at a lower level.
This applied ex factory what ever the spec of the estate.
Cloth or leather, aircon or not, alloys or steel wheels.
This caused concern to some of those purchasing the higher spec and more costly versions.
Many Citroen dealers solved this by ordering three "EXCLUSIVE" badges to replace the boot "VSX" and the wing 2.5TD ones.

I have a high mileage 2.5TD estate that I am going to send to scrap.
I will recover the badges if you wish.
Might even be able to find an EXCLUSIVE one.
Send me a PM with your address if you want me to do this.

John

I must say I prefer the words "Citroen" and "xm"on the boot of the estate, so that anyone looking at the rear of the car, knows what it is. Sticking the word "Exclusive" on the boot is much less informative.

Now that I've got the car to drive without it sooner or later stalling, I can really appreciate the ride and performance, and am happy to proclaim it a Citroen.

Thanks for the badging advice, gents.

Unfortunately, while the font itself is ok, it's exactly the important Ë that's not acceptable as a replacement.

I know, bit of a pain, if you want to use it often.
Apart from doing a bit of crude inter-font cut'n'paste, I did start looking at software for "font editing".
Trouble was, it was all a tad expensive, and I didn't manage to find anything free when I looked.

FontForge. Comes from Linux, the UI is a bit strange if that's not what you're used to. Free and knows absolutely everything.

But you only really need the logo in graphics, not in text. Then a vector art is all you need. I have the same on the circuit diagram cover.

Actually, for quick-and-dirty font editing, Corel Draw is perfect. Far from a full-blown font editor, only an export facility but if all you need is quickly turning a logo or its letters into a font, nothing beats it. But it isn't free, so only if you got it anyway or play with a trial version.

I happen to belong to the first category, so if you think an Xm font with the logo and the CITROËN letters would be interesting, we can arrange that.

Fortunately, Gotham Bold isn't a font that you'd want to use for bulk or body text - it's pretty awful to read en bloc!
Agree that using the word as a logo is probably a cheap way forward.

It could even be thrown into Paint, tweaked, and saved as whatever file format is most convenient.
Often use paint just to switch between .bmp, .jpg, etc.

I've also got an old but still usable copy of Data Becker's 'Your Hanwriting II', which allows you to convert your own handwriting into a TrueType font. All you need is the software, a scanner, and to print out a few special A4 sheets. Did try to use it to doctor (guess which) font once, but it's clever enough to recognise a commercial (regularly formed) font, and reject it, to prevent font copying. Might try again... Great fun to use though!
