What I don't understand was how BMW produced such great diesel engines from nowhere. Did they produce any diesels before before the 525s? Still I guess Ricardo can probably supply all the tech know how needed.

Steve.
BMW had the 524td running for some years before the 525td.

Nope and it's a massive omission.

Especially as it was the quickest Diesel available at the time.

Hi Steve

There was a four cylinder one but I think it was a bit feeble. The Tds engine was certainly a leap forward in design, if you remember the commercial when it was introduced, they had a 50p coin standing on edge on the rocker cover with the engine running.

Very poor low down torque though but I think they possibly designed it like that so that it felt like a petrol to drive to woo the general public, the new ones are much better and very powerful, the police use them as persuit cars, but.. in common with most things new, they are nothing like as reliable as the Tds.

The problem with this poor torque compared with the 2.1 engine is that I keep stalling it, I did it this evening as I was pulling out on to the A35 :o Its not as economical either, about 47 mpg driving it very gently, where the 2.1 would probably do 55.

Its main redeeming feature is that it has actually been designed with ease of servicing in mind and being rear wheel drive the engine is the right way round and you can get to everything, there was a bill with it for a new clutch in 06 - £251.00 fitted  Mind you, practically everything else costs twice as much :D
