Hmmm. My 1995 V6 Excl. I drove from 1995-2004 never did that. (It developed other problems though. Rear electro valve, fried transistors.)
My brother's 1997 model we drove in The Netherlands didn't either

It doesn't matter to me one way or another on the nudge so let's move on....so the hydractive only works when the sport switch is engaged..? ..I quite like that level of control as it bugs me in the xantia that it firms over speedbumps over 15 mph....kind of ruins the expectation....

I know Paul, to be honest that's one of the big things that swung it for me.... I will work through everything front to back underneath and clean, de rust, and reseal as I go so it prolongs the life of everything....was the first job I did on the xantia. I need to look into comfort spheres? They are hard to get hold of through work now.

I think there may be a little confusion, All hydractive two is the same bar switching differences from slightly different ecu's, hydractive two is a good system but the electrovavles can let it down with leaks being a common issue and diodes another resulting in relay distruction in the ecu if ignored.
This system has two automatic modes one with a lower switch threshhold called sport.
Hydractive one does the same job but it has only one fairly reliable electrovalve which supply's fluid to both hydractive valves remotely to operate them, diodes dont seem to be an issue and the electrovalves dont often leak either, this setup has an automatic mode where the car will switch to sports mode under certain conditions and a sports mode which locks the car in sports mode perminantly at speeds above about 10mph (ish)
Im not sure why early H2 would be deamed more reliable as its the Electrovalves that are the week point of the system and they stayed the same though the whole XM Hydractive two production.
H1 Electrovalves are now no longer available but there is some nos out there if a little rare.

I just went out and started my 1990 car and just as it started to move it jumped slightly at the rear....
I think this is because it hasn't been run for a few weeks, so it just stuck slightly then lifted. I don't notice it normally.

There is a slight difference between Series 1 Hydractive 2 and Series 2 Hydractive 2 on cars but not estates.
Series 2 XM car's have slightly larger diameter rear cylinders.
XM estates kept the same size rear cylinder throughout production.
Because of this difference it is important to be careful not to fit mixed rear cylinders when replacing on an XM car.
