Too true Jim. If anyone is going to do this soon, could they pop a photo up of how to do it.
Very good idea this.

You mean the oil in the sills?

I did this on my Xantia earlier this week, removed the foot guards on the sills in the door opening and squirted in oil through the holes. I then went for a drive. My only tip would be to do this on some waste land and not your driveway or in the garage! Sills are not oil tight

Im going to get some Bilt Hamber stuff and treat with that in the sills and around the wheel arch lips. Also behing the wheel arch liners too.
Chris.

All the talk about short term rust treatment is fine BUT back to the original question.

How to save a well loved XM where rust has already got the cills well towards MOT failure.
A good few of us have reported about patch repairs being needed.
The only cill replacement report I can remember was a while ago by Citroenxm's on a Mk1 TD.
No detailed report but I think the replacements were taken from a scrap Mk2.

Patch and mend on need could prove rather costly over time and may not save an XM long term.
Good replacement cills will soon be virtually impossible to source in the UK if not already.
It may well be that we need to develop or source a solution as has been done with strut heads.
This type of drastic rust repair is the norm every 10 years or so with Cx's.
Perhaps we need some links outside the XM forum for this one.

Where do you get Bilt Hamber rust preventive from, have never seen it down Halfords or on ebay.

Thanks John for getting back on topic, so it seems that changing a sill is not an impossibility then. I've seen sills that are in seemingly good condition on a couple of scrappers and the ones on your fleet seemed pretty decent as well with no signs of previous welding but I guess you can't tell what its like inside.

Hi endorfin

The reason my cills look reasonable is that what you see is the best of the bunch.
I have sorted them through and turned the worst ones into spares.
Despite that around half of those cars retained have needed patch repairs for MOT.
I had some record photos of sectioned rusty cills but some sneak thief nicked the camera from the car last month.
Memory card had about 6 months worth of car work records.
Going to download the replacement a bit more frequently in future.

That's a shame, bloody lowlifes was it taken from a car on your driveway?

I have a Samsung wireless camera which can upload photos to my computer immediately via the wifi but to be honest I mostly use the built in camera on my phone which has a pretty decent 8MP camera (actually the whole megapixel thing is a con, you don't need more than 3 or even 2MP) and I have imageshack and photobucket apps on my phone which I can directly upload the images to then link them here from the websites.

Direct from them on their website or look in any edition of Practical Classics for their advert.

John, that's terrible over your camera loss but I trust the thief found your pictures valuable and informative. Bet he was hellishly disappointed at whet he found on the memory card unless of course he was particularly after pictures of rusty XM bits...

Hi Jim

There is a slight chance I may get the camera back.
It appears the police have now recovered a large selection of stolen items.
In a Somerset costal town of all places.
The haul included a satnav from the car next door which they returned.
Switched it on, taped in home and then sent it back to Hampshire.

That's good news John :D Really hope it all works out..

They always say not to put your home location in a sat nav so any potential tea-leaf can't find out where you live and nick everything from there too. Just goes to show that putting it in can work to your distinct advantage sometimes :)
