I HAVE been, and nearly bought a 2.2 GTX Mk.1 years ago, so much to gettin an insurance quote which at the time was about 1500 quid... Soooo close! So I stuck to my 9 for a bit longer...

As for mercedez.. theres only two worthys.. W123 Travellers or S class W126... Nothing else comes close to those!

TheW124 is a good enough car. They are starting to replace W123s as taxis in Africa.

Spooky that Paul, i was after one too when i had my Renault 9....1.4 tl I too got an insurance quote which was about the same money so i too stayed with the Renault 9 for a while longer = Parallel lives?

Losing the Renault 9 still hurts a bit, the brakes started to fail so i went to Kwik Fit (i was a kid and didnt know what i was doing) They quoted me about £200 to replace the rear wheel cylinders so i traded it in! and bought my first Citroen, a ZX 1.4 reflex in white. That was a solid car for a while, but the Renault 9 was a big loss, it was superb!

Robert, that's a C6 with a pug body you have there!!! very nice. good for you.

What would I have. I would go to Renault. Laguna coupe would be top of the list.
Safrane, Our old 21 and a mk1 25. Avantime too for fun.
Lancia kappa, both saloon and coupe quite fancy. Thesis is quite different.
Moderns on sale today, I know the ride would be terrible and everyone seems to have an Audi, but I like the A7, if only as it looks a little like a Rover SD1!

I'm sure there are loads more that I would love to own.

thought of some more....

Alfa 164
Volvo S60 for some reason!
lancia Gamma Coupe

To be fair to the modern cars, I have recently driven a current generation Mondeo, it is very comfortable, as is the regular 407. The last hire cars I have driven were also pretty comfortable, Pug 308, Hyundai i30 and a dreadful Suzuki SX4. The least comfortable moderns I have been in recently include a 330 Coupe, Passat, A3 and A6. The best Audi I have ever been in was an A8 long wheelbase with air suspension.

Like decent hi-fi, most of the buying public have never tried it, and probably wouldn't know where or how to look. Manufacturers are understandably intent on selling 'quantities', and so we get bland, almost indistinguishable - and certainly undistinguished - products and vehicles everywhere. Bling and aspiration can be the criteria for choice, and so we get the X1 and X6. Just occasionally, somebody manages to make something good. All quite sad really, but that's life...

Many of our friends out here and the UK can't believe just how comfortable and capable the XM is, whether on mountain tracks or driving across the country. Neither can they believe she's 17 years old next May! Neither (John) that it's a diesel with four cylinders.

Back in 2011, our local (and very plush) Citroen main dealer had the car in to replace the rear wheel spheres (for little more than the cost of the new items). When we went to collect the car at the end of the day, she was sat on the pavement outside the dealer's display window - valeted and polished and gleaming white. Why? "We like folk to remember what we once used to sell..." Nice one.

Happy New Year,
Chris

I didnt have brake problems with my 9, though I still had no idea how to fix a car because we had a mechanic over to fit a replacment engine to the 9... but rust was gettin the better under neath..

I looked at the 21, and tested a Phase 2 21 Hatch 1.9d.. it was fine too.. but stranglely though I had discovered the BX Turbo D, I plumpt for a BX TXD.. 1.9d... Anyway, never had a Reno again. Now I cant find a 25. Id sell the V6 SEi auto XM for a 25 TXi manual. Needs to be manual. The Reno 25 box is as bad as the ZF box.. actually, I think they are the same unit, just mounted the other way round...

Yeah I believe many 25's were lost due to auto boxes packing up. great dashboards though, and designed by Robert Opron who did the SM xnd CX. He tried to make the Fuego look like the SM....kind of worked only if you squint!

I just loved the whole package! The split dash style, the centre console with mechanical graphic equalizer on the "Hifi" radio, buttons every where, centre arm rests... Just amazing!
