2001-2004 c5's iirccare hpi unless the v6.
all the c5 hdi's are dmf unless auto or are already converted.

dropping the box out of one isnt too bad a job, did it on my dads old 2.2hdi to swap the box and could have done it in a day had the weather not turned to crud and been early Jan :(

rear struts are a weak point if they arent protected occassionaly and the normal citroen rear arm bearings and caliper/hub corrosion.

dpf's can be an issue butngood runs and fluid topup will keep it happy(the cycles only run when the fuel is above 1\2 a tank which has been known cause some of the blockages.

2001-2003 is ONE Hpi option engine.. all else are ordinary injection engines.. the 2.0 can be an either hpi or normal but hpi was dropped in 2003 for poor sales. so there is not many about.. thankgod. Very troublesome

The 2.0 16v petrol also got vvti technology too..

Sorry to seem daft but what is a Hpi?

It may be a moot point in this case, sale of the C5 in question has fallen through, after having the turbo replaced the car has developed a plethora of strange faults including going into limp mode after any hill start, which persists despite a whole array of sensors being replaced. Diagnostics not showing up anything useful. And this is all before any opportunity to check it for things like DMF issues.... Dodged a bullet with this one I think....

Robert I did enquire about the one that Desi has but as a petrol auto it wouldn't really suit (which is a pity as it seems lovely and well looked after). The good news is common sense has prevailed and the money will instead be put into TBZ :D

Thanks for all the advice guys, a real eye opener in a lot of areas!

It's why I want to stick with old(er) cars for a while until I run out of options. But Ciarán, even though I don't know what Hpi means as well, but what i TBZ?

HPI is High Pressure Petrol Injection, a bit like HDI but for Petrol. It was developed with Mitsubishi (GDI). It was plagued with faults as a system, and supposedly impossible for people to repair properly as it has bits of Citroen, and bits of Mitsubishi in it.

TBZ is the 2.1 AUTO XM Jaap.

I see, thank you.

An unproven engine with a mixture of obscure Citroen and Mitsubishi components you say......

Hmm, 'I'll stick to the XUD TBV then for now, even thought there is some obscure mix of French and German technology there....They say if you keep changing red oil.....;) Come to think of it - red oil is pretty weird too :) :)

Yep. Previous Xantia was a 1.9td, that went to 292k before the car dropped to pieces around the engine. This S2 HDi I've got now is like brand new at 204k. Brilliant engines.
