Coolant overflow pipe routing? - One for the purist...

Guys, just looking at the 2.1td xm that Paul is going to be selling soon, I couldn't help noticing that the expansion tank overflow pipe is routed differently than mine.

Ive looked through brochures I have and cant find a picture showing the correct routing of this pipe....Can anyone clarify this at all?

Bear in mind this is a very early 1991 possibly the third earlyest DIESEL model around.. it did go down the side through a clip on later models. But ive not looked closly to see if its routed this way because of a lack of clip on the chassis rail or not..
