I think they are quite well balanced personally. But I know it's not everyone's cup of tea.
The rear flanks of the SM are visually too heavy. I think this is more evident on a real car than in most pictures. On the XM coupe above, the kick-up at the waistline is less pronounced, and there are swage lines to break up the mass of the flanks.
I see what you mean. I think if they deepened the sides of the rear screen it would have lightened the look a little. But I think the SM has a more delicate, sleeker look as a whole. I personally prefer it. Not to say the Xm design above is wrong though.
