If you can't find the leak clean the pump then coat with talcum powder or flour and run it. The leak will soon be obvious.

Exploded image of the pump. Thre aren't many seals (O rings), one on the rear, one on the front, nose seal, metering head seal, maximum fueling screw seal. A seal kit will contain them all.

It possibly is the Bio-diesel that has ruined the seals.

It will only ruin seals if the methanol isn't being fully recovered. Any left in it will eat away at seals.

Veg is similar but there are plenty with high miles on them. Don't forget the car is what 20-25yrs old! Lots of rubber bits will be or have already gone on it like hoses and tyres. The seals in the pumps take a lot of pressure and high heat and then in winter temps well down to -10'c and more like 150'c+ with the engine bay in summer...

A full rebuild with warranty is around £250 isn't it?

Being Liverpool way have you tried calling pf Jones in Manchester as they do exchange pumps and injectors and may have one on the shelf for exchange...

I think a full rebuild is more like £600 unfortunately, certainly looking at the PF Jones website they list the applicable pump at £660.

Although I haven't touched the car since Friday I've spent some time looking at exploded diagrams and I *think* I might have worked out where I went wrong although unfortunately I think the pump will have to come off and come to bits again to remedy the problem. Hopefully I may have a chance to have a look at it tomorrow. Looking again at the pump on ebay I think this is off a later car and the rheostat device on top of the accelerator lever indicates that it has computerised advance which would make the pump unsuitable to me. I think.

But what does the sensor do?

Incidentally I've also spent some time looking at alternative (and newer and more sensible) cars and I haven't found anything else I'd rather drive. I might just have to fix it...

Isn't that sensor to do with the trip computer?

Going back to a pump rebuild...you're right, they are that much. I know first hand.

If I'm not mistaken and we talk about the same item, the throttle lever position sensor on the top of the pump is part of the EGR system. It is used to determine when to open the EGR valve. I simply disconnected mine, it is not part of the pump operation.
