Finally for this evening, there seem to be a wide variety of different options for this part. Pierburg have a unit at about €98 new and it also comes with a sleeve. It seems the missing item that I can´t get separately is the missing sleeve. Apart from that the item I got is fine but incomplete. I wonder why my mechanic hasn't spotted this.

this 15 25 43 part No. is the complete unit pump and sender together, and is for MK1 and 2 XM's

is the sleeve you mention actually required if the pump you purchased is going to be fitted in the tank,

Correct. However, the product listing for the pump I bought seemed to imply 1525 43 was the number for the pump itself. I went to look at it yesterday. The pump I bought is much smaller than the Bosch unit. It connects to the fuel feed and to the electrical clips but floats inside the round holders that the Bosch unit snugly slides into. Robert is kindly sending me the whole darn lot and I hope this resolves the problem.
