Re: Stainless steel clutch mechanism "quadrant" replacement
I bought the clutch cable from AEP off eBay.
They haven't got any stock of any other clutch cables for XMs according to the guy who rang me o check the order (very good service, they linked my purchase to previous stuff I've bought and saw that I'd got a diesel XM, so he rang me to check that I wanted the cable as it is for a petrol)
My plan is to 'borrow' the plastic quadrant off the cable and use it on my car, then to get a Colin P metal quadrant to replace it and then sell the complete unused cable on again.
Bit of fiddling about, but I need the car on the road to get the missus to work and I don't know how soon Colin P will have quadrants available.

Re: Stainless steel clutch mechanism "quadrant" replacement
Cable from AEP arrived today, so planning on heading up to try and sort the car out in the morning.
To remove the quadrant, do i use a hammer and punch to drift the pins out from where the cables attach, or do they need to be drilled out? If the latter, what do you use to replace the pins?

Re: Stainless steel clutch mechanism "quadrant" replacement
As Paul /\ has stated, but make sure theat the punch is NOT greater in dia. that the fulcrum pin, so as you don't jam/split the nylon quadrant (If its like a rivet formed head you may need to remove the peened head first by filing, but NOT by grinding due to the possible excessive heat input) !
Good look with the repair !

.
What ever you don't even attempt that /\ as the heat generated by the drill bit would heat up the nylon quadrant and melt/wreck itboyse7en wrote:Cable from AEP arrived today, so planning on heading up to try and sort the car out in the morning.

Time for an Automatic!!
With my fleet rationalisation scheme in place, I only have one manual car with one of these horrible clutch cables!

Re: Stainless steel clutch mechanism "quadrant" replacement
I came, I saw, I broke it.
First pin came out OK, second one was halfway out when the plastic quadrant split.
So I reckon the car is scrap now. As far as I can tell, that was the last clutch cable for sale anywhere.

Re: Stainless steel clutch mechanism "quadrant" replacement
Rest of the car is OK ish. It is never going to be a smart car. It is used daily to carry kids around to school, beach, shopping etc.
185,000 miles. Did head gasket about 2 years ago at 170,000 miles. replaced water pump and belt at the same time.
It makes a grumbling sound when you turn the steering wheel to the left. Doesn't affect the drive, and has been making it for years without it ever getting better or worse. In various attempts to cure it this year, I have fitted two new front wheel bearings, a new drivers-side driveshaft, new CV joints, new rear right-hand engine mount. None have made much difference.
Paintwork is poor. The front o/s wing has a dent just behind the sidelight, and the laquer has come off it. Rest of teh car is a list of scratches, some deep, in the paint from contact with the devon hedges and someone keying the n/s.
Air con doesn't work (leaking condenser apparently)
Black leather is OK apart from Driver's seat, which is split on the bolster.
Sunroof, and all windows work.
ABS light comes on after a few miles, but passes MOT. Fitted new discs and pads on the front around xmas (so about 2000 miles ago)
Two recent front tyres (only a cheap brand- Barum I think)
Suspension seems OK. Goes up and down, and doesn't make any untoward noises
I'm going to go and visit a couple of engineers next week to see if they can make a clutch quadrant for sensible money. Or maybe Colin P will make another batch.
I won't scrap the car. If I decide that I can't fix it or whatever, then I'll stick a notice up on here so that someone may make use of it.
