I never had the cambelt done but when sold it was almost due IIRC. Probably best to replace the cam belt if you can't find any history of it being done.trampsterdave wrote:Thanks Jordan [good memory!] -I asked phil Cotter if he knew re cambelt being done ...he didnt -do you know when/if?
Cheers, Dave [it has a new bonnet too -someone jumped on the pevious one -just before I purchased]

Looking good and well worth saving.
What was the reason for strut top failure?

Well, It was the normal rubber doughnut ripping away from it's self.
As for an actual cause? Age and fatigue, no obvious external factor i'm afraid.
The drive way up to my folk has previously been quite rough so I suspect just wear and tear has caught up with the 24 year old components.
So pleassed it's sorted

AFAIK, strut tops of that age should have been made with interference metal components, so theoretically, the centre cannot pass through the outer plate.
So much for theory.

Re: M842 BGJ
Interesting.
I'm relaying what was already second hand info.. But the way my Dad described it was as follows.
There's two black rubber doughnuts, and in the middle is a metal plate and this is all moulded together as one piece.
This had ripped in half, the two doughnuts had separated letting the shaft past and through.
Is it possible an early top mount had been used to replace an ageing item 50% of the cars life ago? Or can you not use the earlier item with the later struts. It IS a 94' car, could it have been built with the earlier top mounts... or were the top mounts not really a S1 / S2 update, rather a running production re-design.

Re: M842 BGJ
Factory fitted Citroen XM strut heads lack any protection rings to limit sudden strut rod movement on rubber failure.
This applied to all types of strut head right up to end of production in 2000.

Re: M842 BGJ
This car has now moved on to a new home..
Dad got a Renault Caravelle, and whilst the XM was a great daily, he didn't want to pile on the miles and didn't want to maintan two classics... So, up on C&C it went, and it was snapped up with in a week. All I know about the new owner is he already has a DS and a CX, so this XM is going to keep excellent company. If ya see it about, grab a snap and throw it up on here because I love that this car has a thread regardless of owner, rather then the other way around.
Thanks for all your help, it was always appreciated...
(I'm convinced XM's are about to rocket, keep them tidy, guys!)
Last Pics with us, for reference.
