Had the next best thing for a while. a 205 STDT. the 1.7TD on GTi running gear and a nice interior.

Went like a scalded cat and was faster than the petrol GTi..

I had a 1.6 GTi for many years and still regret selling it...

Paul, one good thing with the four doors is they loose a rust trap in the rear half of the sills....

Ah yes the STdT was also in the 405 S2 model range too...

Suede trim and GTi everything else, the DT engine of course being the same as the BX but minus the intercooler as there was no space for it!!

82bhp they were rated, in the BX the intercooler gave another 10bhp, at 92bhp..

But the weight of the 205 made up for the loss of BHP...

I remember the press title.. "The Diesel that thinks its a GTi"

No, I agree Russ. These days if it was a straight choice between any GTi or a Gentry then the Gentry would win every time...

My GTi went to make way for an Activa. The lure of leather, luxury and comfort was calling very loudly but not quite as loudly as it does now...

The GTi is great fun but comfy it's not and when you get to a certain age comfort starts to take priority...

And the unofficial one:

"The Diesel that gives the GTi a bloody nose"

Honestly, they did. their acceleration was unbelievable for a diesel... And their top speed was not that slow either...

Apocryphal perhaps but there's been tales of the police letting 205D owners off speeding fines because they just could not believe they could go so fast..

One, when the 205D was relatively new, concerned a 'pull' on the motorway for doing 103mph. The coppers let the driver off because they doubted any 1.7 normally aspirated diesel could pull that kind of speed; they thought their kit was off-calibration..

Those of us who've owned them know different....

I do prefer comfy cars, must admit!
I don't know why, but I never associate the 405 and BX as being related.... on the same floor pan and engines ect. But of course they are. Maybe because they are quite different animals. Impressive making them so different out of the same bits.
