They are rubber O rings, just obtain the closes size you can.

I'm surprise at gear oil leaking out of there as that is the top of the gearbox.
The O rings are to stop water leaking in.

Yes indeed, but it is. We replaced the long nail like rubber seal and the leak reduced but the rings we replaced were obviously not big enough. I have ordered some on eBay of several sizes, none exactly right to see if they ll stop it coming out. I ll let you know!

Assuming it's an auto, are you sure the differential isn't overfilled?

My original thought was overfilled box.

I remember working on a xantia once.. Replacement speedo sensor and I took it out and gear oil started pouring out., however.. All others I worked on.. Or replaced speed sensors I never had any come out again.

That is because the filler plug I just that, a filler plug, not a level plug.
The auto differential uses gear oil, whereas the gearbox uses Atf...two different fills.

Most people think the manual gearbox filler is also the level, as is often the case.

The one you worked on and gear oil came out of the speed sensor, they were lucky not to wreck the clutch.
I've seen a brand new clutch wrecked due to over filling.

Hi

Mine is manual. Think I’ve sealed it, thanks. Now having sealed all areas of leaking lhm I seem to have chased the leak over the car. The area I was talking to you all about with the low pressure rubber elbows etc I’ve done. If you stand under the car and look at that contraption on the right of the car facing front, to the left of it there is a barrel shaped object with what looks like a metal ‘bung’ on the top of it which you can sort of see, can feel but can’t get to unless you take the metal bracket off supporting it. I haven’t done that yet but there is a fair amount of lhm leaking from there now. It seems to be coming from the bung area on top. I think it has metal unions. We obviously have to take this off and plug the unions but where is it likely leaking from and will the ‘barrel’ need reconditioning or re sealing? If so, can I do it myself and how long does it take? The unions seem to be fluid tight.

Thanks boys.

Goodness! Remember "a picture is worth a thousand words" - in this case a picture might save an awful lot of splinters in fingers!

It sounds like the height corrector, but maybe the electrovalve.

If it is only weep then it is likely to be a low pressure return, if it's spraying out, it is likely to be high pressure.

Yes can’t do a pic atm! It’s not the electro valve, it’s the part to the left of it if you re facing the front of the car. So it could be the height corrector. Same question as to fixing it?
