Hi all,

Just after opinions really, I know we are all hoping the XM will and some have become classic, however, I still love older classics, from around the 70's period, maybee even late 60's

Ive been looking at Humber's, mainly the Imperial from around 64 to 67.. They look good, hardly get talked about, have a straight 6, 2.2 litre engine, and are not the norm, Ford, Triumph, BRG etc etc

What do you think or even so, to tempt the above what would you have as a Classic??

I have a soft spot for Series 1 Range Rovers, the SD1, and the Mercedes W123.





I like the last Talbots as well, I would love an Alpine or Solara too, these are the cars from my 80s childhood.

What is a classic is very subjective, which classic cars people choose to own again is a very personal thing, it may be the car their dad had, their first car, the car they dreamed of owning as a child. Rather than the merits of is car X a good car as such. I like to see cars that were common when I was a kid, early Sierras for example are starting to make an appearance at shows, and I go and have a look, and say "ohhh its been a long time since I seen one of those" or "the country was full or these". Simple nostalgia. I never had a Sierra, and don't want one either.

For me it's the much maligned Austin Allegro. Lovely, floaty hydrolastic suspension, velour interior, vinyl covered roof, LOADS of room to work under the bonnet and looks like nothing else on the roads (looks almost totally diferent to Harris Mann's original drsigns too ) I've had three of them and should never have got rid. stick on a couple of twin SU's and the 1500cc is capable of topping 100mph which the handling and braking could easily cope with - guaranteed to bring a big grin to your face every time you drive one.

I have a particularly soft spot for Humbers, I had three, a Hawk and two super snipes, one 2.6 and one 3 litre, the interiors were beautiful with red leather, real walnut and rear picnic tables. I saw a couple at a show last year and they don't dissapoint even by modern standards, they must be at least as big as the XM, but with column gearchange are a full six seater. The Imperial is an upmarket version of the Super Snipe, my wife worked for a Rootes garage in Sevenoaks where they sold them.

The cars I had most of were the six cylinder Vauxhalls, Velox/Cresta, I had pretty well every model from the '55 E to the late '60s PC, they were very light to drive and fast, by the standards of the day, although the last couple I fitted with diesel engines.

I did and wouldn't want another..

But a nice W123 Coupe would be part of my stable if I had space and time.

Having driven some old Humber Sceptres and later Hunters (which are mechanically identical), I'm not inclined to want one. Though controlling the rear end in slippery conditions having recently passed ones test are memories to remember..

I thought the Super Snipe and Imperials were 2.2 Striaght 6's? Im also aware that the imperial had electrically adjustable rear suspension!

Humber Sceptre, as you put, thats a Hillman Hunter in reality, I was on about the "Proper" Imperial/Super Snipe from late 60's...

I Thought Ford / Vauxhall / and BL would get mentioned so soon!

I mean original Sceptres C1964, not the later Arrow cars.

As a young driver I had a couple of Mk2 Cortinas so the chance of a GT or Lotus Mk1 or 2 or 1600E would be on the list. I had some great fun in a 1275 GT Clubman so one of those too. I've always fancied a DS and a 3.3 turbo 911. Oh and a Jenson Interceptor FF...

Oh hell there's too much to list!

Well..for the two days it had MOT on it before my mate wrote it, and very nearly me, off.

It doesn't really matter if the XM is ever considered "classic" or not ... Who cares what other people think ?? I certainly don't Look at the poor GS for example, this was probably one of the best cars Citroen have ever made. Yet they are worthless.... Infact when did you last see one

As for "classic" cars.... A quick look around my yard will find all sorts of junk.... A lifetimes worth of "projects" we will probably never get too
