Buzzing Relay

Post by harryjoe » Fri Aug 27, 2010 1:09 pm

Hi all.

Sorry to repete myself , as i did ask this question on another topic,.

But i have a buzzing relay, ( n no i'm not going to the doctors about it ) ;) when i asked for some advise on this from the other topic, there is a cure for this, having trawled through the topics i cannot fine it anywhere, .
So can anyone shed some light on this for me agian ?
It is connected with the indicators, but no sure what the cure was short of buying a new relay, i does sit there quite happily buzzing way while i'm going along , and stops doing it when i signal, .
What is the cause, i now some forum members did say , but can't find the topic where i bought it up.

Hi Nigel,
The cause is almost certainly the indicator stalk (I've had the same problem myself).
It is possible to repair, but it's not easy.
Simplest thing is to replace the stalk. Start another topic 'Indicator stalk wanted' in sales & wants section. Someone will probably have one they can sell to you.
Alternatively, try Ebay, there's usually one or two cars being broken on there.
This seller is a member of clubxm.... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/citroen-xm-2-1-en ... arParts_SM his mobile number is in the ad, give him a call, he's broken a few cars so he might have what you need.

Regards,

Paul

Hi Nigel

Giving the switch a good workout will often cure the fault.

Thanks Peter.N & Paul

What is the cause of the stalk doing that to the relay ??, is it just dirty contacts ? or is the stalk generaly getting tired ?
i will whip it off and have a look, so it's not the relay ,
I will get some prices for a 2nd hand (new ) one, got to get to the CXM rally, it's been a long time since iv'e used hand signals
Peter can you give me any advice on hand signals   ,

Hi Nigel

I think the trouble is caused by meteal filings worn from the contacts causing leakage across the contacts.

Believe it or not I had to use hand signals when I took my test :?

Do you think the Examiner would be pleased if people used the modern hand signals when on a test...

Hi Nigel,
There are remedies involving replacing worn plastic with epoxy resin to restore the stalk function in making positive electrical on-off contact rather than intermittent, resulting in relay chatter.A search of this board or XM-l should find a remedy. I think Shane in Oz was one but there were others as well. Smoke is always a worry!!!

Hi Roy.

Thanks for that , yes n you are right, smoke is a worry, and not what i want to see !!
Got the CXM rally coming up about 140 odd miles for me and don't want to have to start hand signals on the M25 etc !!!
although sounds like Peter can give me a quick refresher in that   .

Even with doing all my HGV 's & Pcv licences, they would not be alot of help in a truck, unless you have long arms  ;)

They wern't part of the test way back in 1983 !!!!
